How Many Times I have to Repeat This?

A few Guest Bloggers do it the right way, not all of them fully understand that posting the same article to their own blogs is going to hurt their rankings, I really want to know why you bother yourself writing an excellent article, submit it to another blog, and after it’s approved and published you re-publish it again on your own blog! you never promote the original article, you even didn’t show on the comments to reply to people who commented on your post.

This is happening all the time, and I believe that some bloggers still don’t get it right, they don’t know how to guest blog and how to get the most of guest blogging for another blog, I don’t know if they forget or didn’t read the guidelines of the blog they are posting to, maybe they forgot, maybe they don’t care! I really don’t know!

Before Guest Posting on any Blog, PLZ… Think!

  • Read & Follow the guidelines that usually exists on the submit your article page!
  • If you think to re-publish the whole post over to your own blog, then plz (don’t submit your post to our blog).
  • Put in your mind that it’s highly recommend to reply to comments and interact with your possibly new readers unless you really don’t care!
  • Help us to promote your post, share it with your followers, bookmark it, talk about it and link to it on your blog!
  • What else?!

Get it Right!

If you don’t know what is guest blogging and you want to get it right, then I think you should know What Guest Blogging Is NOT and try Getting It Right, you know yourself, I am actually not mad or anything, I just want to help you out, we need to work together to enhance our blogging community!

I really want to hear your opinions about this matter that bother me sometimes, so plz, give me an answer to this questions:

  • Have you experienced the same behavior from guest bloggers on your blog?
  • Do you think it’s acceptable to re-publish guest posts?
  • What else you can add?

It is to bad that a few will ruin it for all the “good” bloggers that follow the rules.

More silly is that the rules you have are basic and simple to do.

People need to realize the gift they are getting when they are GPing on a good blog with nice PR and large readership.. it is a gift to ANY blogger.

I’m behind you 100% my friend.. time to kick some internet ass I say lol

Duplicate content hurts. An idea would for guest posters is to do a follow up or expand on their guest post on their own blog. Link to the guest post and then continue the conversation on your own blog. Maybe address a few points made in the comments. That would serve to be an advantage for both blogs with related articles but different content.

Great thoughts Hesham, indeed is it Ok to post the link of your guest post that is shown at present on the blog that you submitted it to, to show as a link only in reference to the blog that you submitted it to? but not the entire thing on you blog?

Sure! it’s “recommended” to do so! it’s good to link to your guest posts as you are helping spreading the word about your work and at same time it’s good for the host blog because you are giving a backlink to the post!

its a good thing that the first question I asked when I was invited to guest blog in another community is that “is it ok to re-post in my blog”… I had no idea of these things but I understand now about duplicate content being bad for SEO.

Good thing : “post ABOUT it!” , share with your readers, and link to it!

Bad thing: “post it”!

While I may or may not remove a duplicate post from a guest, depending on my mood, I will make sure they never guest for me again, and most likely warn others as well.

All this is done after I verify that it was not just a newbie mistake.

Responding to comments is a must to guest for me, it’s in the rules. ;)

There are lots of bloggers doing exactly this! In stead of them adding more posts to build up their pagerank on the long run, they actually only go and post a similar “very boring” article. Patience is a virtue.

It’s very strange of the guest bloggers to republish the post again on their blogs. Firstly it will go down as duplicate content and only hamper their blog rankings.

Sheesh.. This is reminds me much of article submissions. People want to post their article on ezine then turn around and post it on their site or even worse, every other article directory out there!

I think the reason some bloggers do this is that they don’t realize or fully understand the benefit of a guest post and may feel like they put a lot of effort into something that their own blog should reflect. I would tell those people: Guest blog posts provide you with brand recognition, built trust, lasting traffic and a golden linkback for SEO purposes. To me, that’s more than enough. You shouldn’t feel you need to post the same article on your own blog.

Probably you know that it’s not a good idea to remove articles after publishing it for so many reasons, especially after submitting it to social bookmarking sites and share it with your followers, and the most dangerous action is to remove a post if your blog readers and bloggers commented on it, I think this is a crime ;)

Thanks Brandon for stepping by and giving your feedback!

Reply

Brandon Connell May 18, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Actually, you can create custom 404 pages that include excerpts of other related blog posts, and you won’t lose anything necessarily from removing an article. I have never had to remove one, but I have absolutely no reason not to. It would be a tragedy to remove one with comments. But it’s something to think about so that guest posters take you and your seriously.

Think about it like this… Sites like AssociatedContent.com have the same policy for exclusive articles. If you submit one and get paid for it, they not only remove it but will go after the money they paid or shut down your account for breaking their policy.

As far as search engines go, you won’t hurt your blog. Blogs are meant to be updated regularly, and it is a normal thing to remove content on them from time to time.

Yes.. redirecting could solve this if you don’t have comments on the articles!

OK! let’s think that bloggers should have a big heart, and we really don’t like to heart anyone, because our main goal is to help others and ear credibility in our community! If things are not so good then we can take another way!

Thank you for the advice Brandon :)

Hi Hesham and all the others who are condemning such guest bloggers,

I’ll raise my hand! I’m the reason for Hesham’s post I believe. After Hesham graciously accepted my blog post here – http://www.famousbloggers.net/picking-right-keywords-seo-success.html – I went to republish it on my own website at http://www.aldricchang.com.

I do apologize for this, although I have my reasons for doing so -

1) most of the other blogs I guest blog for do not mind this
2) I was excited to share my virgin post on Famous Bloggers but I guess I did it the wrong way
3) I was too busy yesterday to reply properly to comments

Anyhow, I accept the criticisms and apologize unreservedly for not being a good guest blogger. I will endeavor to continue writing good articles exclusively for Famous Bloggers.

Thank you for giving me a lesson.

Yours sincerely,
Aldric

The good thing in our community is we love to learn from each other, so no worries… this post meant to get most attention, and it’s not personal at all because I had this issue more than once truly!

I suggest you put all your work under “exclusive” , this will work like magic for you :)

I have made a lot of mistakes myself, and I learned a lot from these mistakes more than my success, but others was punishing me so badly :) so I am not going to do the same to anyone because when you suffer some something you really don’t like it to happen to people you care for, and I care for all bloggers in our community.. ok? :)

I am not sure where you have guest blogged before, I mean on what blogs, but this is cool, now you have something to actually tell those bloggers, maybe you can contact them and point them to edit their guidelines.. most people will appreciate your cooperation!

I love your post so much that I feel sad we could waste this big effort, so let’ do something, you can edit your post and remove the duplicated text and edit the title of the post, when Google boots visit your blog it will get updated with the new ones, then we will have 2 different posts leading to your work!

Another thing, I would love to see a butter fly in the comments of your post :) , interact with people, try to answer their questions, if you don’t have an answer it’s very good thing to say that you simply don’t know or can not find the answer….. Build your new audience by you good work!

I am glad to see your comment here, and I will be more glad to publish and promote your coming work, not on FamousBloggers only, but anywhere else, so .. don’t hesitate to contact by anyhow email/twitter and just ask ;)

Thanks for the great reminders. I’m in the lucky position that my main guest poster doesn’t have his own blog; that’s why he posts on mine. He wants to write, but not regularly. He doesn’t want to maintain a blog, just be anonymously famous.

Since one of his guest posts (Teach Yourself ACL) is the most popular one on my blog (much to my chargrin), I directed him to this article just in case he decides to dive into the blog waters. But I’ll take traffic over pride any day.

Right… duly noted!
As much as it’s common sense not to re-publish your work after guest posting it, I have an idea of where they’re coming from. I’m not condoning the act, but it’s a lazy man’s way of syndicating an article and I think that’s what they’re trying to do. It’s wrong, and quite pointless, but as long as there will be cheap and lazy link-builders, this is going to continue, sadly. After all, they aren’t doing it for credibility but just to get paid. That’s what makes us all different from those people :)

And I’m pretty sure as with posts like this, the people who should actually read it will ignore it. Sad but true…

Lastly, I think when someone does something like this, they should be informed, if not publicly (that might be mean) but at least via email, sometimes they honestly might not know. If they persist in the act, then yes, a public outing should be done! After all, there’s no other way they’re gonna learn!!
.-= NEW from Tola´s last blog ..Should Brand Names be Part of Keyword Analysis? =-.

The true is they are doing it to get paid in most of cases and some other cases they do it because they don’t understand what they are doing!

Actually no body will read the duplicated posts because simply it won’t be found on search engines, it will disappear after a while and will be just a memory or a number on how many posts the blogger have wrote!

I remember this happen like 4 times or something, and I informed everyone, even those who copy and past full articles to some bookmarking sites… the only ones I don’t have time to deal with them are those who stole the posts and publish it on their blogs, this is happening with FamousBloggers almost every month!

And.. yeah Tola …there’s no other way they are gonna learn ;)

Thank you for your awesome feedback ;)

So, bloggers who ever republish their articles will lose!

Its good that you bring that argument again here because a lot of newcomers in blogging still don’t get it that much.

On a sidenote, it can result on different circumstances. For instance I submitted a guest post on one blog, but the blogger didn’t respond so after a month or 2 I submitted it to another blog. eventually it was accepted and after it was accepted 2 weeks after, the first blog responded saying he has now published the post. So that brought up dup.content but not on my blog but with other blogs.

I think its important as well the that the blogger accepting guest post should response asap. what do you think?

I think it’s our job to guide the new bloggers to the right path Melvin!

This exactly happen with one of our bloggers, and we ended with keeping both articles, and actually you should contact them and tell them that they were very late and you are going to publish the article somewhere or publish it on your own blog before you take that step!

And yes.. you are right, I want to respond A.S.A.P but some time I have more posts that I can publish, and you know that promoting articles could take some time, and also I prefer to give enough time for any new published posts to get enough attention and responds and comments, I was talking about this with one of my friend by email since he contacted me asking about the destiny of his post since he submitted it before one week from contacting me, so I reply to him that there are still 5 posts a head before his post goes online!! and this means it will take about 2 weeks to be published… I was thinking about this and I don’t feel good because I want to find the best way to speed the publishing process, and some how I am stucked, so this week I am going to try publish 2 to 3 articles everyday, and let’s see how the home page of the blog will look like!

Thanks Melvin for your feedback, happy blogging my friend

This thing often happen especially those bloggers who don’t have their own pc that can only update or engage to their blog readers when they have money to rent 1 unit of personal computer in internet cafe.

Indeed, there are so many outstanding bloggers out there having their unique and creative ideas to share but they are not lucky to share it more often because of poverty.

These thing often happen to my countrymen who do blogging also. That’s why, if my blog would earn much money, I will definitely help those bloggers and expose what they can do to standout in the crowded virtual world of internet.

But anyway, thanks for the reminders.

But you know, I think those who don’t have computer and/or internet, actually they shouldn’t blog, they should find another job.. Blogging need some money to start and pay for hosting and other stuff and this will take a lot of work and time, then probably they will quit after some time! Of course not all of them, maybe a hard worker can do it and reach success, especially if he lives where the dollars are more valuable of the currency of his country (if you understand what I mean!)

I want to thank you so much for your great feedback, and also for your great willing to help and support others, this will be written in your history of blogging for sure and will return favor one day!

I could say these things my friend, because I am one of them before. I used to update my blog before when I got home from school every weekend.

Well in fact, when I am in school, I used to think and plan what should I do to make my blog better and useful to others.

Then a blogger and now a friend of mine (Vishal of dumblittleblogger) came to ask me some favor about starting a blog and I was so happy that there was someone would welling to listen to my blogging advice and tips.

When the time passed by, I almost quit blogging because for almost 10 months of my blogging journey, I only earn a penny. But it change when the month of December came. I earned my first 100 dollars as an affiliate and of course that’s a big success for me as beginners.

I know that blogging needs some technical skills to earn money from it. But sometimes, I thought of a plan that would make it at ease to my countrymen so they can also build their own online business, because dollar is a big value here. And they also think that this is an opportunity to them.

One Filipina grab my attention when I stumbled on her site, she build her online business with Paid to Click and she even earned more or less 1000 dollars per month and that’s not bad, right?

And I got the idea to also build that kind of online business in my own style of sharing to people how to make money online in an easy way.

I think that would be their first step to blogging where they must also gather referrals to make more money from it. And blogging is a good medium to gather those referrals.

I think, ” If I help other people to achieve their success, it’s also my success”.

Thanks for the reply. And still I am welling to learn more from you… God Bless…

I keep seeing these posts cautioning guest bloggers over and over and I am assuming that it’s because it’s a big problem. I kept thinking that the basic courtesy of being a guest blogger would be self evident but obviously it’s not.

I haven’t even approached people even on Anne’s site for guest posting because I wanted to make sure that I write the best articles I can for the guest sites.

Thinking it through, the problem may be this. A lot of bloggers are not business people. They’re not used to acting with business ethics and they don’t understand how search engines work with identical content. People are also lazy. There is a lot of promotion about quick rich scheme by doing blogging and the reality of building a community and visibility is more than they expect.

People also don’t show courtesy to others on the internet. Research has show that people act out their worst behaviors on the internet because they feel safe and anonymous.

Hesham, you should just not accept any future articles from those who have violated their gentlemen’s agreement with you. I’m sure that there are many wonderful writers out there who would love to feature on your site.

I would follow your advice, but I am always open the doors for those who learn from their mistakes, those who didn’t mean to do it, so… basically it’s not on my plans to stop them from posting on our blog unless they really want to end their blogging life by their own hands!

What a coincidence because one of the guest posts I originally intended to submit on FB covers this exact topic. It’s important if you guest post that you follow up by helping to promote the post within your own community AND within the target blog.

Make sure you comment as if it were your own because it IS your post. Help out the other blogger by answering the questions that arise. Do a snippet on your own blog to tell your readers where they can find your guest post – this does two things: A. gives your readers an additional post to read and B. promotes the other blog, bridging the communities.

Also try to submit your guest posts without grammatical errors and any additional media so the blog owner doesn’t need to fix broken links and edit the hell out of the article before going up.

The better you can provide the entire post, the higher chances you’ll develop a working relationship with the other blogger.

(I guess I’ll discard the blog post now haha)

I could care less what the guest poster does because I’m the type of guy who lets things go. Duplication of content is never good for anybody but what can you do?

Common courtesy dictates that you treat a guest post as any of your own blog posts; of course don’t republish it anywhere and reply to all comments in a timely manner. Some newbie bloggers either don’t know any better or don’t respect their fellow bloggers.

Why do you want to do this anyway if guest posting is already a promotion for you?

The thing is I am think that one of the posts will be dropped by Google after a while, but not sure which one Google will decided to drop, is Google going to check the publish date? the more authorized blog? I don’t know!

Also this has a very bad impact when readers see the same article in different sites, diffidently writing something new is what people expect from bloggers ;)

Hey Hesham,

It’s always a great opportunity to guest post somewhere –
While you don’t have to answer every comment – you should definitely be active in the conversation !
But the person you mention here doesn’t care about it – he or she just drop their content and off they go ;)

I also believe in mutual respect and sharing – the internet is no one-way street.

If I were you, I’d address the blogger personally – just for a honest conversation. Maybe she or he doesn’t know anything about the unwritten laws of guest blogging ;)

Of course Mars, it’s not required to answer to every comment unless is has a direct question to the author, although the bloggers replies is going to benefit him more than anyone else! if they drop their content and leave.. then what’s the real benefit?!

I think some bloggers will never get any future benefits from hitting and run!

Instead of dressing the bloggers, I prefer to work more quietly :) I mostly contact them by email and/or drop a comment on the post explaining to them that it was not the best action to re-publish the post!

I love to make my posts open as much as I can, this is to remind everybody with what they should do with out pointing with my fingers to particular persons :)

mmm.. I think the first law of guest blogging should be “Never re-publish your post!” nice idea by the way ;)

Hi Hesham :) , Good to see that you have raised a nice topic :D

Well I don’t mind if they are republishing the guest posts to their blog , but based on few conditions:

1. Make sure that try to tell about the guest post by giving a link back
Getting a juicy link back is good for SEO of your blog :)

2. The post which they publish must be a sequel of the guest post

For Eg : If I write about 10+ Best Wordpress Themes 2010 in FamousBloggers , Now I get another few good themes which I want to publish in my blog , then I will make sure that in the start of the post itself I will try to tell my visitors about my guest post and then start off. This post will act as an sequel to my guest post :)

3. Last but least the Permission
If I am republishing a post , then I will politely ask Hesham about this , If he tells No , I will defenitely not publish it. Instead I will search for some more post idea ;)

What do you think Hesham ?? :)

Thank you so much Sunil for your time to add this valuable detailed reply!

I want to comment on #3, actually no one need my permission to republish his own post :) the thing is it’s not acceptable in my opinion to republish the post elsewhere, bloggers should know that because this is what I have asked in the guest posting guidelines page, so.. personally I will never accept it!

I don’t mind if people repost a guest post on their own blog. I’d prefer that they didn’t. One thing I would actually recommend bloggers do, is keep a page for guest posts that they’ve written. For each guest post they’ve written provide a basic summary, or just the first few sentences, then add a “read entire post” link that sends the reader to read the full post on the site that they were a guest on.

This way, they can show their writing elsewhere, and drive traffic to the other site, without taking anything away from the article.

This is a good idea to David, I actually provide an author page for each blogger that has all his work here on the blog plus a few badges that can be used to promote their author page, this gives more credibility to the blogger!

I like your idea, and thanks a lot for your time, I have listed your Twitter and I will be enjoying your blog articles ;)
