How To Get More Twitter Followers

What You Need to Know For Maximum Exposure on Twitter, and how to get more Twitter followers Fast! While the internet hasn’t been in existence for very long, its rate of development has been exponential. Of particular note is the rise of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, LiveJournal, and Twitter.

The massive popularity of these sites has led some to coin the term “Web 2.0” in reference to both the new interactive capacity and the new networking focus of the internet in people’s daily lives.

Twitter, as the newest popular addition to this group of sites, has become particularly important for those who work in e-commerce or internet marketing professions. To many in the advertising business, it represents an easy, cheap, and effective way to reach a massive audience.

Read on to learn the best ways to create a huge group of followers on Twitter for any business purpose you can imagine.

Focus on content

While there are tricks you can use to get more followers, when it comes down to it, the main reason people will follow you is because they enjoy and appreciate your content.

If you have nothing interesting to say or are simply spamming them with ads for your business or product, you will not gain followers and will probably lose those who gave you the benefit of the doubt.  One method is to focus on what you are interested in or something truly unique you have to offer and work from there: people who search for the topic may find you and you can gain a base the old-fashioned way.

To help this along, it is good to use hashtags, albeit sparingly. A hashtag is a way of marking a keyword in your post. For example, if your specialty is PPC advertising, you may want to put a “#” mark before “PPC” in your tweets to mark it for easy searching. Not everyone uses hashtags, but they are popular enough to increase your followers.

Watch/Follow Top Twitter Users in Your Niche

Another approach would be to watch top Twitter users in your niche, use Twitter search to track hot discussions in your niche, and focus your efforts on those topics to generate a lot of user traffic. This method is more time intensive, as you have to continuously stay updated and come up with new topic specific/latest news type of tweets.

Advertise Your Twitter Page!

Advertise your Twitter account everywhere:  on blogs, other social networking sites, your business website, business cards, and even real-world business meetings and events.

For every new follower you get from this sort of targeted traffic, you have access to a whole related network of people who will be naturally more inclined to follow you than the average web browser. This helps your followers grow through word-of-mouth, recommendations, and horizontal linkages.

Another small tip

In the process of doing all of this, don’t forget the basics.  Don’t tweet too much, or too many unrelated tweets, as you may lose your audience’s attention. Tweet about pertinent and interesting information, make sure you have a profile picture and  fill out your bio, and cater to what your audience wants to know.  You will gain and keep more Twitter followers in no time at all.

What is your ways for gaining more followers and keep those who are following you on Twitter?

I do appreciate all above comments but can someone out there help me getting little more traffic at my website. As a routine, I tweet around 1,000 tweets and individual tweet contains 2/3 @mentions of Twitter IDs, which makes it 1k*2=2k peoples approached daily!

Seems good at first sight. I do receive responses, favorites & re-tweeting from many people but still, google analytics indicates 30-50 visit per day? (I have coded google tracking codes in individual links).

I have tried multiple things but it isn’t working as I get to read success stories of twitter!! Is there anyone capable enough to find out bugs in my account and tell me what I am doing wrong – my id is “JBGrab”.

I will be looking after to receive any profitable comment from fomousbloggers.net.

In my opininion the best way to get more followers and retweets is to retweet regularly tweets from other bloggers on your niche and follow those that retweet your tweets

Hi Kostats,
But if you will retweet to often this will annoy your followers, IMHO. Therefore you can lose a part of them. In this case you shouldn’t be to obtrusive.

Hi Adriana,

Great pointers about Twitter.

Your point about not tweeting irrelevant links is very important. Whenever people use the Twitter search engine, having tweets that are well optimized for search queries is very important.

Funny thing. We all focus on SEO for Google, but nobody ever mentions SEO for twitter searches.

SEO is hands down “the most targeted” traffic you can get.

Therein lies the reason that you tweets have to be on topic and keyword and hash tag rich.

Great post…:)

Great pointers Adriana! While I believe hashtags are great, including them within the topic or sentence is a major distraction for me. Instead adding them at the end, after the link is more appealing. It’s just how I feel and follow.

Thank you for the good tips. We have a few rules: never talk about what you ate. Always be positive and polite. Genuine compliments are powerful in getting followback and staring conversations. Humor is very important, somewhat rare on Twitter, so appreciated. Never forget to thank your ReTweeters and return the favor. Be relevant to your subject without being too narrow.

Its very easy for many people to overlook the effect of conversation – why not be it just Good Morning. I remember @kannanbala. He often greets with simple Good Morning/Evening and the conversation begins.

The best way to get twitter follower is to engage in Twitter and continue conversation. @mention and #tags works great to help you reach your target audience.

Hi Adriana,

I’ve been using Twitter for a while now and it is important for me to follow those who have interesting things to say, because I like to read it :) I know that there are people who use twits generating machines and most of them send simply spam. So, I don’t follow all those who follow me, if this is the case how they treat Twitter.

That’s a great tip about hashtags. I’ll try it out!

Good post. A good free tool to use to gain put hash tags in your tweet is tweetchat. Tweetchat allows you to add automatic hashtags to your tweets while viewing viewing realtime tweets using the same hash tags. This will allow you to not only get exposure for your niche topic it will also allow you to find targeted people to reply to and follow. It’s a great free tool.

Hi Adriana!

The basics are so important. I tend to operate a policy of asking myself, “What would someone get out of following me?” when I am Tweeting. Let’s face it… there has to be something in it for your followers, whether it’s entertainment, humour or information.

Tweeting too much is a pet peeve of mine. If I login to Twitter and my screen is completely full of Tweets by just one person and this happens over and over, I tend to unfollow! But maybe I’m just impatient….

Adriana, great article.

It’s very important you shore up the relationship with your followers and allow them to get to know you. One way that I’ve found is great for doing that and opening up communication is using Follow Friday. Instead of giving a long list of your favorite followers though, I find it better to use one tweet per individual with a reason why you follow them and then link to their website as well. They often appreciate the extra effort as well as the traffic love.

Hi Adriana,
I think from a bare basics point of view, this would be a great introductory article for beginners. Over time, depending on people’s ‘why’ of using twitter, they tend to forget the basics and head over to spammy tactics. Right now, it IS very noisy in there. and it’s still growing to the tune of 600 million users!

Adriana,

This is a fantastic overview of Twitter. I love using Twitter for networking and relationship building. I am quite open about probably being a Twitter addict and like you said I watch carefully to not Tweet too much. The only thing worse than people who Tweet 30 times in a minute twice a day full of spam, is the bots and “pro” spammers.

I also agree that answering people or creating conversations helps grow my list a good deal.

I think it is important to stay true to yourself and your followers. Be who you are and be natural. The Twitter “rules” are many, best is just to be polite and nice without being annoying I’d say :)

I liked Geralds tips about twitter directories, I’ve never used one so I will check that out.

A very clear and concise post with great tips on using Twitter ~ thanks Adriana. As with all web content, you should only post quality tweets. I can’t understand what people who spam Twitter think they are accomplishing.

I have had the best luck building a Twitter community by following people in my niches, looking at their followers and looking at the people who tweet about my niches (I use Google Reader for the last step).

Angie (Losing It and Loving It) March 9, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Great tips Adriana! I totally agree on using hashtags sparingly. Some people just go way overboard and it’s annoying LOL

As for following people in my niche, I have a hard time finding people who are not spamming all the time. I have a lot of people to sift through to find the good ones.

The thing I struggle with most is that I use my name as my Twitter id and have used my account for both my weight loss/fitness niche and business. It really doesn’t always go together but I have a hard enough time keeping up with other things I’m not sure I could handle another Twitter account. Maybe one day!

My biggest tip like you mentioned above is not to follow everyone who follows you. If I don’t know them, I usually keep an eye on their Twitter stream and usually know if I’ll connect well with them. I’m also NOT offended if someone I follow doesn’t follow me back ;-)

I believe content is the king of Twitter, I personally notice that people spam everyone and it may inflate the number for a second, but after a while everyone starts to realize that they don’t even have anything to actually offer. In face its pointless to even have people follow you if you aren’t going to put in the time and effort to keeping them coming back.

All great tips.

To add another little tip, you can get listed at Twitter directories like we follow and twellow

These are just a couple examples but there are a ton of other similar directories out there.

The cool thing about these directories is that they allow you to add yourself under relevant categories. So if, for example, you put yourself under marketing as a category, people looking in the directory under marketing will be likely to find you.

I definitely agree with advertising your Twitter profile. I’d add that you should include adding it to Twitter directories such as Twellow and WeFollow. I always suggest those when telling new Twitter users where to find relevant, targeted followers, and it makes sense that while you’re looking for those kinds of followers, you should add yourself so you can be found by others as well.
