What You Need to Know For Maximum Exposure on Twitter. While the internet hasn’t been in existence for very long, its rate of development has been exponential. Of particular note is the rise of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, LiveJournal, and Twitter. The massive popularity of these sites has led some to coin the term “Web 2.0” in reference to both the new interactive capacity and the new networking focus of the internet in people’s daily lives.
Twitter, as the newest popular addition to this group of sites, has become particularly important for those who work in e-commerce or internet marketing professions. To many in the advertising business, it represents an easy, cheap, and effective way to reach a massive audience. Read on to learn the best ways to create a huge group of followers on Twitter for any business purpose you can imagine.
Focus on content
While there are tricks you can use to get more followers, when it comes down to it, the main reason people will follow you is because they enjoy and appreciate your content. If you have nothing interesting to say or are simply spamming them with ads for your business or product, you will not gain followers and will probably lose those who gave you the benefit of the doubt. One method is to focus on what you are interested in or something truly unique you have to offer and work from there: people who search for the topic may find you and you can gain a base the old-fashioned way.
To help this along, it is good to use hashtags, albeit sparingly. A hashtag is a way of marking a keyword in your post. For example, if your specialty is PPC advertising, you may want to put a “#” mark before “PPC” in your tweets to mark it for easy searching. Not everyone uses hashtags, but they are popular enough to increase your followers.

Watch/Follow Top Twitter Users in Your Niche
Another approach would be to watch top Twitter users in your niche, use Twitter search to track hot discussions in your niche, and focus your efforts on those topics to generate a lot of user traffic. This method is more time intensive, as you have to continuously stay updated and come up with new topic specific/latest news type of tweets.
Advertise Your Twitter Page!
Advertise your Twitter account everywhere: on blogs, other social networking sites, your business website, business cards, and even real-world business meetings and events. For every new follower you get from this sort of targeted traffic, you have access to a whole related network of people who will be naturally more inclined to follow you than the average web browser. This helps your followers grow through word-of-mouth, recommendations, and horizontal linkages.
Another small tip
In the process of doing all of this, don’t forget the basics. Don’t tweet too much, or too many unrelated tweets, as you may lose your audience’s attention. Tweet about pertinent and interesting information, make sure you have a profile picture and fill out your bio, and cater to what your audience wants to know. You will gain and keep more followers in no time at all.
What is your ways for gaining more followers and keep those who are following you on Twitter?

Hi Adriana!
The basics are so important. I tend to operate a policy of asking myself, “What would someone get out of following me?” when I am Tweeting. Let’s face it… there has to be something in it for your followers, whether it’s entertainment, humour or information.
Tweeting too much is a pet peeve of mine. If I login to Twitter and my screen is completely full of Tweets by just one person and this happens over and over, I tend to unfollow! But maybe I’m just impatient….

Adriana, great article.
It’s very important you shore up the relationship with your followers and allow them to get to know you. One way that I’ve found is great for doing that and opening up communication is using Follow Friday. Instead of giving a long list of your favorite followers though, I find it better to use one tweet per individual with a reason why you follow them and then link to their website as well. They often appreciate the extra effort as well as the traffic love.

Hi Adriana,
I think from a bare basics point of view, this would be a great introductory article for beginners. Over time, depending on people’s ‘why’ of using twitter, they tend to forget the basics and head over to spammy tactics. Right now, it IS very noisy in there. and it’s still growing to the tune of 600 million users!

Having your Twitter bio written correctly is very important for your twitter followers to see who you are and what you are about and should be written well with out using too many keywords…

I have a much better response on FB and Linkedin, so I rely on those more often. It takes me more than 140character to build a relationship. With Twitter i feel like i’m tweeting to the wind. But my goal next month is to take some time to learn to use some twitter tools and get better at it.

Adriana,
This is a fantastic overview of Twitter. I love using Twitter for networking and relationship building. I am quite open about probably being a Twitter addict and like you said I watch carefully to not Tweet too much. The only thing worse than people who Tweet 30 times in a minute twice a day full of spam, is the bots and “pro” spammers.
I also agree that answering people or creating conversations helps grow my list a good deal.

Advertising my Twitter page is something that I need to do more of, so thanks for sharing that tip. Marked that down on my list of things to do.

Great tips Adriana!
I think it is important to stay true to yourself and your followers. Be who you are and be natural. The Twitter “rules” are many, best is just to be polite and nice without being annoying I’d say
I liked Geralds tips about twitter directories, I’ve never used one so I will check that out.
Personally I’m not a big fan on auto dm’s when follwiwng someone.

Clear information on a method of communication that often ends up being MIScommunicated. Thanks, Adrianna. Nice to learn that it’s not considered impolite to not follow everyone who follows me, and that others hate those auto-tweets, too. However, I think maybe I’ve been abusing the hashtags. (blushing.)

A very clear and concise post with great tips on using Twitter ~ thanks Adriana. As with all web content, you should only post quality tweets. I can’t understand what people who spam Twitter think they are accomplishing.
I have had the best luck building a Twitter community by following people in my niches, looking at their followers and looking at the people who tweet about my niches (I use Google Reader for the last step).

Great tips Adriana! I totally agree on using hashtags sparingly. Some people just go way overboard and it’s annoying LOL
As for following people in my niche, I have a hard time finding people who are not spamming all the time. I have a lot of people to sift through to find the good ones.
The thing I struggle with most is that I use my name as my Twitter id and have used my account for both my weight loss/fitness niche and business. It really doesn’t always go together but I have a hard enough time keeping up with other things I’m not sure I could handle another Twitter account. Maybe one day!
My biggest tip like you mentioned above is not to follow everyone who follows you. If I don’t know them, I usually keep an eye on their Twitter stream and usually know if I’ll connect well with them. I’m also NOT offended if someone I follow doesn’t follow me back

I put my twitter ID on my business card this year too, and a lot of people commented, “Oh you Twitter too?” Even had a few people grab their phone from their pocket and follow me right then and there.
Great tip!

I believe content is the king of Twitter, I personally notice that people spam everyone and it may inflate the number for a second, but after a while everyone starts to realize that they don’t even have anything to actually offer. In face its pointless to even have people follow you if you aren’t going to put in the time and effort to keeping them coming back.

All great tips.
To add another little tip, you can get listed at Twitter directories like we follow and twellow
These are just a couple examples but there are a ton of other similar directories out there.
The cool thing about these directories is that they allow you to add yourself under relevant categories. So if, for example, you put yourself under marketing as a category, people looking in the directory under marketing will be likely to find you.

Excellent addition. I personally haven’t been using Twiter directories so far: I should probably look into that.

This is great information. I’m fairly new to the Twitterverse and am slowing starting to learn the basics. I do have a question though, well two actually, how important is the following/follower ratio, and what is the ettiquette regarding follow backs?

I personally don’t follow back everyone who follows me. You need to look at their Twitter stream and see if what they tweet interests/help you, if their tweeting frequency is right for you & won’t drive you bonkers, etc. It’s important to put some thought into who you follow.

Nice basic tips, sometimes people can forget the fundamentals and be blinded by money. The key to using twitter is to be engaging and likable. People don’t want to follow someone who is boring..
P.S. ..and for the love of god, please don’t have twitterfeed blast out 4 tweets every 30 minutes!

I definitely agree with advertising your Twitter profile. I’d add that you should include adding it to Twitter directories such as Twellow and WeFollow. I always suggest those when telling new Twitter users where to find relevant, targeted followers, and it makes sense that while you’re looking for those kinds of followers, you should add yourself so you can be found by others as well.

That is a good point Jack! I think DM’s carry almost no benefit anymore. I will admit that I usually send a DM to everyone that follows me – but for a couple of seconds work it could get me a new subscriber.
