I think BuddyPress is going to give you more than you expect! Elgg is fine but if you have a problem with it you will have pain to code it! it has a very complicated code structure.

I remember once I was working on a project using Elgg and we spend lots of time trying to find a developer to do our client requirements, all people we meet asked for long time to check the code and understand how it works, at the end they refused to work on the project, I must say that this project budget was more than $20K ! anyways we used Joomla!

To be honest, I think the setup and idea is great, but there’s still some stuff to do. I’m also testing BuddyPress again, after I noticed the new CosmicBuddy theme. It’s a rather tough choice between the two.
