But first, I want to let you know that I am using Aweber, a cool mailing list service that everybody knows about it! Check it out! And give it a try for only one dollar for the first month! I am sure you will not let it go!
Call it Shady ways! Who Cares?
I usually don’t hide anything, simply because I don’t have anything to hide! An I almost share everything I am learning and it’s part of my own experience, and probably this is why my blog readers never stop coming back unless someone is taking it personal lol!
I am using a very nice and simple plugin called Aweber WordPress Plugin, it connect two sensitive parts of your blog to your email list directly, these parts are your:
- Registration form
- Comment form
So, basically the Aweber WordPress Plugin allows you to automatically send an invitation and subscribe new members when they register to your blog, or add a new comment, this is very useful for blogs that open for guest blogging, as you might want to subscribe all your guest bloggers as you need a fast way to let them know about your blog news and updates, so there is no problem with that at all, just go a head and require them to subscribe with no worries, everybody is happy!
But, talking about enabling the plugin in your comment section is a little dangerous thing, because you can tick the check-box in the plugin features to subscribe everyone comment on your blog (this is what I did) and most of your blog commenters will actually not read, not even notice what the heck you put under your comment form, and because people are “too lazy to read” then problems happen, and some will complain about that, specially if you are trying to sell something for them, this will annoy the majority of your subscribers! They will just forget your goods and remember the bads, well.. this is how people are!
So, let me share with you what I got by using this list building technique, you can see the results from my Aweber account, I have got 441 subscribers in only 2 months, and with no work at all more than enabling the Aweber WordPress Plugin:
Someone might call it a “shady technique”, I must say that this technique works just fine if you use it on the right time, but probably in the long term it’s not the best way, as you can get into a mail list problems that you really don’t need!
Plz, put in mind that I am experimenting these techniques live, jut like anything thing else I am experimenting to find out the right way to do things by my own, and my main reason is to develop new ideas for my blog to write about, and share with you what’s really working by approve it to you!
I was expecting more feedback and maybe some bloody reaction, but I was shocked because this technique seems to be working! I actually got one single feedback and 2 complains out of 401 subscribers! But because I really care and it’s my main target to create a safe place, I won’t bother my readers, and this is why I didn’t use this list in a serious way! I am going only to send one single email to let them know that I am closing this list for ever!
Don’t Try this Technique at Home!
Put in your mind that my case could be different than yours, I know my blog authority and I am sure I am not hurting my blog or reputation! but I am not sure about you!
So.. from my own experience, no one will recommend it and I also don’t recommend it! And this is why I un-ticked the check-box and give people more freedom to choose whither they want to subscribe or not! (I have done this based on feedback from the community)
Build your Email List the Right Way
I am sure that everyone of you want to build his own list and FAST! Some of you give free stuff to do it and some others find some other ways, and this is pretty cool!
But what I see and it’s not working is to place your “Mail list sign-up” ugly form on your sidebar and/or below the content area, and wait for months till your list meets a few convinced subscribers! I must say it’s not the very best way, and it will take so long till you reach your very first 100 subscribers! I have done this for a whole month and got only 2 subscribers! Probably because I wasn’t giving away anything, or maybe because my form was not attracting anyone to sign-up (it was not working!).

I have the latest Version of everything, Thesis 1.8, Blogussion 1.0.4 and PopUp Domination Version 0.9.6.
I discovered this yesterday after upgrading to the latest Thesis. After installing Thesis, I checked my blog without the Blogussion and I saw that my Pop Up Domination was working. After activation my Blogussion I don’t see it popping up anymore.
So the problem lies withing the Blogussion script.

Ok then it seems that PopupDomination is not compatible with Thesis 1.8 and Blogussion 1.0.4, the problem being the Blogussion theme.
In that case I guess you have to wait for Alex to come up with an update for Blogussion.

Latest version I am using now Version 0.9.6,
Popup domination plugin was created after the plugin was created actually after WP WP3.0.1 version, so.. Yes it’s compatible with WP3.0.1
I have at the moment 430 subscribers to my email list, this means I was able to get around 100 subscribers every week, but of course it will depends on your blog traffic and whither you are giving something valuable for free to your blog readers or not! (in my case, I am not giving anything special more than site updates, and I am using it to communicate with my readers)

When we use aweber, we have an option to put opt-in form that inline or popover.
The options of Popup Domination are Awesome but it’s not working with thesis version 1.8 beta2 and beta4.

The problem could not be fixed since i am using thesis beta 4 with bloggussion. Just know the reason.
Anyway, we have option to use lightbox or popover from Aweber.

Hi Hesham..
Wondering if you can offer any advice at all.. or tell me if you have had the same issues..
I’ve got pop up dominator & installed.. seleceted that I am using aweber and tehn put in the RAW html code in the box..
The pop up appears.. you fill in your details and then it takes you to a new web page that has the aweber webform on it. The details that get put into the actual pop up dont get added to the list at all..
And well the second page?! Lets be honest I really dont want that there! LOL
If you’ve got any advice I’d appreciate it, I know you’re not support etc lol.. but it’d be mega helpful!

The popup look good on your blog, I can see the lists and the photo, I have just subscribed to your list to see what’s happening, but I didn’t get a confirmation email!
There must be something you are missing in the setup process! I suggest you check all tabs in the settings!

I really didn’t do anything special to make it work with Thesis, just followed the normal instruction that comes with the plugin! so… I am not sure how I can help!
A good idea is to contact Popup Domination support, send them an email, let them know about the problem, they will help for sure! (also before doing that, plz recheck the configurations, maybe you didn’t hit the button on the right where it says: “PopUp Domination is Inactive. Turn on!”) in the plugin settings page!

Hey! Thanks for your reply. I had already contacted them and they said it probably had to do with Thesis and that I had to call a function, and I think my thesis skin had also something wrong with the footer, but I managed to make it work calling it right before the HTML and everything looks fine.

Yeah, I was thinking of this also, I already have the Blogussion skin, but I didn’t have the chance to look into it to see how it works, so I prefer not to give a solution without knowledge!
By the way, the Blogussion skin looks so good on your blog, it’s the best set of colors in my opinion (the Gray), I prefer it more than the blue and the other orange, green colors!

It’s the Blogussion theme. I just upgraded to the latest thesis theme and I realize it shows on it without the Blogussoin theme and when I installed the Blogussoin back on it, it does not pop up

I tried to test the Maxblogpress last night but using the mailchimp code seemed to mess up the popup. I am still experimenting, and will let you know if I find any free alternative. I doubt anything will match this product though for free.

I’ve been doing a review of some plugins myself, but one of my Tribe Syndication mates recently coded this up:

On the right hand side, if it doesnt pop up when you arrive you will see “Clifton’s Lightbox Plugin” click here to see it in action.
Its a free download after you opt in. It is more coding-focused CSS/HTML wise, not as WYSIWYG as PD is, but that makes it more flexible. Its the first one I’ve seen that easily handles a video.

Hesham, is this the first time FamousBloggers has had a popup box? I’m curious if you’re able to compare those numbers to another popup tool? For example, aweber now has lightbox popups built in although they arent nearly as sexy as the the popup domination plugin. Adding a popup almost always increase optins but it would be interesting to know how much of the increase is due to having a new poup and how much is due to this particular one being worth the extra $40. Your thoughts?

Yes it’s the first time (good question by the way!) I actually can compare the Popup Domination plugin with Aweber pop-up, but as you said it looks more sexy, but with some effort you can make any form looks he way you exactly want it to be, personally I don’t prefer drag & drop, it’s limiting the creativity! and I prefer working with CSS , but I think that also can be done with Aweber lightbox but it’s a lot of headache as you have to keep the form popping all the time to be able to see it and test it! that means you have to move to a test site or something!
Anyways, I have created a lightbox using aweber and I am enabling it right now, I tuned off the popup domination plugin, and I am going to check how Aweber popup will perform in the coming 2 or 3 days!
I will then let you know!

Where you’re PD popup is sexy, that aweber version is ugly as sin! *giggles* We may have to take that into account to compare the two. However, your right, if the Aweber box isn’t easy to style, its really a lost cause for the average blogger.
I’m currently playing with the popin thats built into subscriber magnet which I just finished beta testing for maxblogpress. Even without their popin or their stealth subscribe (similar to what your aweber plugin has but works for almost any double optin list) I doubled my optins. I know once I put the additional tools in play Il’l do even better than that.
Cant wait to see these results!

This plugin is a great plugin created by Michael Dunlop. I’ve had the same experience as the author of the article (increased sign ups). I ran into a technical difficult when they first launched it and their support staff helped me almost immediately.
It was well worth the money to me…
I was a little worried since I wasn’t in the “make money online” or “blogging” niche that it would work out that well, but it seems to be doing great so far. It’s nice to spend money on a product that actually performs like it says it will.

It’s really great popup and really looking nice, and i am sure that’s really great way to build or increase the subsriber.
At the moment i am using wp great box. It’s also not bad.
To be honest though, i personally do not like to use popups, because i dont like whenever i visit a site and it shows a popup.

Don’t worry, it will not bother you each time you visit the blog, it’s only set to show once a week, and maybe next time you will find something new on the pop-up as it’s for me a promotional tool before it’s for building an email list!
I am like you, I don’t like pop-ups but using it with care hopefully will make everyone happy

Awesome Hesham. The subscription box looks great. Usually I do mind the subscription pop ups but this one is way nicer looking than all of the others.

I agree that the look and feel is so important! and with the Popup Domination plugin you actually have more than one theme that you can switch between them at any time with one simple click! this is a big option that I see!

Pop-up Dominator seems nicer-looking and cheaper than this other subscriber product that was 5 times more expensive and uglier.

Aweber plugin is something else, mainly used on your comment form, and registration for! is has no relationship with Popup Domination plugin!
I am using Aweber and both plugins are working fine fine with Aweber!

I don’t think email list building is a particularly shady way of building up your traffic and your profits while you’re at it
I’m glad you’re so open about your traffic and things like that. It makes you a more trustworthy site!

I think that this is a good alternative to signing up for newsletters, instead of having that “dangerous” tick under your comment box. Like you said, many people don’t bother even looking at it and this way it won’t hurt anyone
Now, maybe and just maybe, is there a way to activate the pop-up upon exit? If this is possible then I think that it is a much better form of being less intrusive than the other one. Although it may work, I am curious to know how the “retention” factor will perform.
Finally, I do agree. Building a list is important for online business and everyone should have one, preferably form an opt-in which is exactly what you are doing as people will perceive that it is coming from you and thus are compelled to give it a peek, lol

And… yeah.. this is brilliant idea, probably I will report it to the creators of the plugin, it would be nice if they add it as a new feature! although I think probably people will find it more annoying in some levels if it happens more than once, so this is something to use with care!

This company (I provide writing services to) is actually planning on converting their blog visitors into subscribers : )

I’m not so sure.
On the one hand I agree that it does increase your sign-ups, but then again I absolutely hate it when you are reading a blog post and the pop-up box shows up as you’re just getting into the article!

Yes, I agree.. this is why I set to pop-up to pop up after “as I remember” 3 or 5 seconds which means you are not actually started readying anything yet, and you can change the time even to make 0 seconds! it will not popup while reading!
Also this will pop up only once every week.. so.. no big deal (I think)

It’s a big difference because first of all the look and feel, and then the new features added like adding extra information in an easy way from your WordPress dashboard, plus editing is so simple and fast process!
Also for me, I think it’s great because I am a designer after all and I can play better using the pop-up theme rather than drag & drop which I don’t really prefer it!

It’s a Wordpress plugin, so if you have your squeeze running on a Wordpress platform then this is how it will work! but it won’t work on HTML platform!

Pop Domination Plugin… the name plugin alone sounds like its ready to conquer
I have seen this working on other sites. The one on Famous Bloggers has a nice touch.

OK.. ok.. that’s enough now, we really don’t need to bother the subscriber anymore, so maybe they will not plug themselves to the plugin

The survey is actually not part of FB blog at all, it’s from Technorati advertising system that I signed up to it like one week ago or something, I have earned nothing to mention
But I am just trying it, and I will write about it soon because I actually don’t like it, or maybe still I don’t understand it, but the relevancy of ads is as you can see in the blog footer some times, they display “baby diapers” ads and burger sandwiches some times lol! and their reports sucks.. I just don’t like it!

Ya, it did showed some advertising nature. It was asking about my mobile, television set and whether I plan to buy some gadget in future and all. But I really liked it because the design was simple and the processing of each step was quite fast.

Hi Hesham, I’ve seen this pop-up around and I’m sure it works to build a list. But I have a question from the readers point of view. Does this plugin show the pop-up the first time someone comes to your blog? I think so, but I can’t figure out how people can decided to subscribe to a blog if they haven’t read any of the content yet?
I know this plugin works, but I always want to laugh when I see it!

Hi Ileane,
The plugin will show the pop-up on the first time someone visit the blog, then it’s actually not important that he/she will subscribe immediate, but at least this plugin grab the attention and stuck into the mind of a person when he/she is reading, then it’s the content of the blog, I think if they spend a few minutes reading something interesting then they likely will remember the pop-up and will try to find a way to subscribe which is the form on the sidebar for example! (This is how I imagine it!)
So.. it’s a good reminder! and as I was telling Mark in my reply to him, this pop-up can be used in several ways! so .. for example if I have anew e-book or a good offer, I will show it on the popup and I will visitors to signup to get the e-book! probably not all of them will do it, but after taking a tour on the blog, they may think of it!
But, I agree with you that what makes sens is visitors will not subscribe on the first visit, but what I can say? they actually do subscribe from the very first visit!
For example, people who subscribe to blog feed, the certainty do it from the very first visit, or How you explain that I got around 10 feed subscribers almost everyday?! and ufff.. when I write a bloody awesome article and this happen once I got about 70 subscribers in one day!
Do you think all of them visited our blog before? I doubt it!
Some one like you probably will not subscribe, because simply you are my friend and you visit me from time to time, and if not.. you actually know my news from social media or other blogs! (but it’s going to be better if you do subscribe, you never know what you are missing some times!
And by the way, I am planning to build an awesome weekly newsletter, if I can not make it pro.. then I will forget about it lol!

I am usually not a big fan of pop-up forms but this one seems better looking than most and doesn’t seem to be as “aggressive” a pop-up, if you know what I mean.

Actually me to, I am not a big fan of popups , especially those who pop all the time and every time you visit a site!
It’s not aggressive because you will not face it every time you visit the site, so ina week or two will not be that bad!

I have seen these opt-in forms on a few sites and was curious how they performed. Personally I think they are a little obtrusive, but I am willing to give it a shot.

I agree with you that it’s a little obtrusive, and it’s not a good idea to popup every time a visitor landed on the site! but this absolutely is a responsibility of the owner of the site! so.. for me I find the default option which displays the popup every 7 days ideal at the mean time, and maybe latter I will reduce times the popup shows!
Another thing that I think is good about this plugin, which is the customizable features that allow you to edit the form in an easy way from you dashboard, you can use the text fields to set a different message (let’s say) every week, and highlight some important news, offers or promote your own products, so every time the pop shows doesn’t have the same message!
There are a lot of useful tools, but we have to find how to use them, and the most important thing is to find the time to actually use them

It is definitely an awesome plugin and glad you are seeing amazing results so far! I love the design of your popup and how you styled it to suit your current design. I would consider changing the font colour of the text above the left site of your popup. The white is just a little hard to read on the gray.
Love to see a follow up post in about a week to see how it is still going.
