Are Your AdSense Revenues Dropping?

making money online adsense

First off, as a disclaimer, I am not a making money online expert by any means. I am more of a making money online novice – a blogger looking to find ways to monetize my sites, sharing my experience, and seeking advice.

After receiving my first check from Google for reaching the $100 payout threshold for AdSense, I was psyched. Each month, although the earnings were small, they were steadily increasing, so when I got my first direct deposit from Google, I was certain that I would be reaching the next threshold soon.

Since the beginning of 2010, however, I feel like I have seen a steady decline in the earnings per click. Here are some theories, and why they may or may not be the contributing factor.

Possible Factors Affecting Earnings

Changes in Ad Management

Between December and January, the only thing I changed was moving my sidebar ad (which is gone as of this past weekend thanks to my new sponsor blocks) down a bit in relation to other sidebar items. Although I received only one less click this month on the sidebar ads than last month, the earnings on them were 50% less.

On the other hand, one of my sites with no changes in ad placement which had the same amount of ad clicks is 75% less.

Changes in Site Traffic

All of my sites traffic, even though the month hasn’t ended, are on average higher than December, a statistic that I find very pleasing on all other levels, except that it hasn’t seemed to help in AdSense conversion.

Changes in Site Topic

All of my sites have stayed on the same topic. In fact, I optimized Kikolani mid-month to be more targeted for blogging and social media, but I haven’t seen any significant changes, AdSense wise, since that change. One of the sites I am analyzing is static, so the topic has not changed since October, so having the same amount of clicks and less revenue seems strange.

Addition of Mobile Ads

This one is quite new, so I don’t have a comparison of how it does from month to month yet. I just made Kikolani mobile blogging friendly using a plugin that allows you to add AdSense to the mobile theme. So far though, all of the ads have been public service announcements, so I’m not very confident that this will get me anywhere.

Ways to Increase AdSense Earnings

So what am I going to do to try to raise my AdSense earnings? I think I’m not going to focus on my main blog so much in the AdSense game, as I know the sidebar ad was producing more revenue than the link units in the single post ads (but getting advertising sponsors for that zone will generate more revenue than AdSense anyway). For my more static sites, however, I want to get those earnings on the move up again.

Blocking Low Paying Ads

I ran across an article on how someone doubled their AdSense earnings, which discussed ways to block low paying advertisers, deselect categories of ads you do not want displayed on your websites, and allowing / blocking certain Google Certified Ad Networks. While this sounds good, the flipside were other articles that were against doing the things I just mentioned. One article that was particularly convincing was on the fact that Google sends ads to your site that should generate the most clicks based on your site’s content. And why wouldn’t Google want you to have the highest paying advertisers, considering when the ads get clicked, Google gets paid too (duh).

Blocking Ad Categories

The one thing that sounded good was changing the categories of ads that can be shown on your site, which can be found under AdSense Setup > Ad Review Center. For me, these category selections are confusing though. The only options I have include cosmetic surgery, religion, politics, drugs & supplements, dating, get rich quick, video games, weight loss, and two categories for sexually related ads.

These are obviously not the only categories of ads I get on my sites, as my poetry site gets poetry ads, my blogging site gets blogging ads, and so on. So I must be missing something, that or they only allow you to de-select the main categories they know people will possibly dislike being on their sites.

Using Google Analytics

Another method I am going to try (and I’m not sure why I haven’t before this point) is looking into Google Analytics to see which pages converted the most in AdSense earnings. Knowing the top posts and AdSense referrers will help in determining what type of content converts the best, and where to promote it when trying to increase AdSense clicks and income.

Your Google Adsense Tips

I know there are more ways to make money online. But for some sites, monetizing with AdSense is just less complicated and time consuming than seeking out advertisers, affiliate products, writing eBooks, etc. So for those of you using AdSense for monetization on static websites or blogs, what methods / tools do you use to increase earnings?

In the old days (early 2000s) it was fairly easy to increase AdSense income by creating quality content specific to keyword phrases that have high bid prices. Simply build traffic to those pages and your income would increase.

I was able to increase my income on one site I had from ~$100 a month to ~$400 a month using that strategy. Back then we had the benefit of the Overture Bid Tool. You could use any Google account to get an idea what the bids run for keyword phrases you’re interested in but the most accurate advice would need to come from someone actually bidding on those phrases because the Google estimates are terribly inaccurate.

That should still work today if anything does but it has been many years since I used AdSense.

My AdSense income has been absolutely terrible this month as has my CTR. I am not exactly sure why that might be but thought it might be related to the nicer weather with more people getting outside during the spring since I haven’t been through a complete year using AdSense.

I also have wondered about the randomness of AdSense earnings. I am glad to see that I am not the only one experiencing this difficulty, but I hope it gets better.

You might have been “smartpriced”. Take AdSense off of sites that have extremely low conversions. If you are getting about 1 clicks for every 200 visitors, then take AdSense off of that particular site. Extremely low conversion rate and Google will also decrease your earnings for your entire account.

Hmm, interesting. I haven’t added on any new sites since seeing the drop – I will look into that possibility and see if I can find the possible “bad apple” in my group. Thanks for the tip!

I used to make a constant $120-ish per month and now it is dropping. But I always try other monetization methods because my techie readers know not to click on those ads :(

A very informative post indeed on Adsense . I think dropping in of Adsense revenue is a common these days. I have just been paid once in Adsense and don’t know when will be my next payment.

Agree with Dana, people from search engine will give more revenue on adsense. I’ve been monitored my adsense earning through analytics, if google send me lots visitors, adsense earning increase. Even I’m not an adsense Guru, IMO better SEO is better for adsense revenue.
Thanks for this awesome article Kristi.

I kind of assumed the SEO was just to get the targeted ads, and so far, my ads are usually spot on for my sites, so I’m sure that end of SEO is good. Some of my sites just need more traffic buildup.

Here you go: How I Doubled My Google Adsense Earnings. I was wary about including it, since there are such differing opinions on whether you should do it or not. I still found the categories to be the best part, as you can block some inappropriate ads from ever showing up.

This article has some useful info. But the more I read about how adsense works the more I learn to accept that it has a certain randomness to it. On one day I’ll get a lot of clicks and low revenue. On the next day — without changing a thing — I’ll get fewer clicks and higher revenue. Perhaps that’s simply in the nature of how the program is set up.

It’s the nature of how the program is set up plus the nature of your blog visitors! some people used to click while they read and travel from a blog to another/website and some others just close a page after done with it!

Did you think before about Media in general and how it could effect your blog traffic?

OK! let me try to explain this by an example because it happen with me all the time when some special events I blog about them like annual conferences, holidays, and sports for example, so every year at the same days my blogs get more traffic:
- When the same conference is held after one year I got more traffic because people search for, they want to book a place, find information, see what happen in the conference!

- At the same Holiday time people search to find greeting cards for example and this brings more visitors to my blog with out even blogging about it.

- When the same team win or lose a match and people got crazy and they search the internet for the match photos they find my pages on the top of the results (note: it’s old photos) but this will not stop them from checking it ;)

I remember once I attend to a concert of an Egyptian singer called Amr Diab, and I got a bad impression about the concert (not him, he is no. one and I like him), then when I went home I blogged about it and added some photos asking people about their impression about the concert, and I got tones of traffic for a week, and I am still getting traffic until today when ever he do a new concert anywhere in the world ;) because the he fans toke my photos and posted them so many times in discussion forums and it’s not even a high quality photos, I toke them by cell phone. and you can find them by searching Google using the keywords”amr diab concert” under images. I have 2 images on the top of Google search result first page.

So when Amr Diab sings I earn money LOL!

Oh! I am so sorry for the long comment, mmm would you publish a comment like this one if some one posts on your blog?

You have a very nice blog by the way.

I’ve notice my ads have been remaining quite static of late which cool because that’t better than going backwards. I believe in giving Google the best spot because at least I get paid for every click, unlike the other ads where I may get heaps of clicks but no sales.

It would be nice if you could see exactly who was clicking on the ads as this would be invaluable as an aid for working out what made them click in the first place.

I had noticed a drop in my Adsense revenue recently, but if my memory serves me right, this happened the same time last year, with the end of January dropping down quite a bit, but then in the middle of February, it had a nice steady climb again, not sure why, but I dare say it’s down to one of your mentioned points.

Great write up Kristi, while I prefer using products and services for making money online, I like that you can easily monetize with ads and make some extra money without having products, and I have had sites in the past that performed well with adsense (fairly well for the amount of traffic they got).

I particularly like your disclaimer at the top (maybe I should use that from now on too! LOL).

Have you always only used the text link ads? It took me a second to notice them and I was looking. I would experiment with ad placements and different ad size/types. I found the 250×300 text ad to be the best performing, and the placement that worked best for me was right under the title.

I know that is intrusive on the content, so it is up to you.

Sometimes the most suttle changes can really make a difference….

Best of luck.

I just didn’t want someone to think I’m some Adsense guru. I am trying to find ways to make the ad less intrusive indeed. I did run into this tip today about showing ads to only search engine visitors. Primarily, it’s the search engine visitors that click on the ads anyway, so I might see if that route works better too. Thanks for the ad size suggestion too!

This is very true… I know that some of my sites would perform a lot better if they were higher in SERP’s. On site SEO seems to be good, as the ads are always right on target, but getting the people there that want to click them is what I need to work for next.
