To become a link building expert you need to do more than memorize what other people say are effective link building techniques—you need to build and test your own link building systems.
Become A Link Building Expert #1—Build Backlinks
Experts have experience. The best time for you to start getting experience is now. Read what a current link building expert says about link building and apply it to your site or sites.
Work on one technique at a time until you master it and then proceed to the next technique. Try any and every technique which isn’t forbidden by Google and other search engines. (Maybe even try the forbidden techniques on unimportant sites. Any technique is worth trying as long as it isn’t illegial or immoral.)
Keep building your experience—that’s the number one step toward becoming a link building expert.
Become A Link Building Expert #2—Test, Test, Test
Now that you have experience in several different link building methods, you need to learn which are the most effective for different types of sites.
Start with a simple and tried-and-true link building technique such as guest posting. See how effective it is on new sites with few incoming links and how effective it is on established sites with hundreds or thousands of incoming links.
Then try the same experiment with other link building techniques, such as link baiting, or other types of sites, such as sites outside your niche. Keep testing different techniques until you’re satisfied that you know when and where to apply them.
Become A Link Building Expert #3—Read More
You started out by following a single link building expert and mastering his or her advice. Then you proved his or her advice was accurate (or not) by testing it. Now it’s time to look for new ideas.
Read everything you can about link building. Note that this step must come after mastering and testing—if all you do is read about new techniques, you’ll never get started, you’ll never become a master, and you’ll never become a link building expert.
Become A Link Building Expert #4—Meet The Masters
Now that you have experience, data, and learning, it’s time to look for another link building expert with whom to share your experience. See if your data matches his data; see what he’s read that you haven’t; suggest innovations to him and critique his innovations.
There is no way to become a link building expert without finding someone to confirm or deny your pet theories. If you operate in a vacuum, you put yourself at risk of going off on wild tangents which waste your experience and hurt your sites.
But if you find another link building expert to play off, you’ll both rapidly improve each other’s technique and become masters more skilled and more experienced than any solo link building expert.

Always important to try different things and find what works. Also to never look for shortcut black-hat methods because they will be killer in the long run.

I think to become a true link building expert you need to be a fanatic tester. You should be passionate enough to read about things and test them and find ways to improve upon the process. Unfortunately that is a rare breed these days.

With SEO, like any occupation, it’s important to stay educated and to take the time to look at things differently. Don’t just stick to one strategy and think it’s going to work for every site you build links for, every site is different and you may need to have different strategies for them all!

At any cost please do not indulge in black hat link building techniques as it would hurt you very badly. Try to get quality and genuine links in order to stay away from Google penalty.

With all the great tutorials and seo techniques offered by many so called experts of link building of the past years, how could newbies know they are following forbidden strategies which will be detrimental to their sites.

Tracking links and results is very important. if you create 10 backlinks to an article but you don’t know the effect they’re having then it’s a waste of time.
They could even hurt your rankings instead.
Fortunately, nowadays Google puts more value on quality than quantity.

The thing with guest posting only submit your best stuff or people just will not follow on. That defeats the purpose. Yet what an excellent way to build your back links and get you added in.

Focusing on one tactic, testing, tracking and then reevaluating is the best way to become an expert at link building, not to mention any other expert youd like to become.
How else will you know what works for you and your site, and what may not?
Another important tip which would come after you attract that traffic to your site, is optimizing your site’s content, design and calls-to-action so you can turn more of those leads into sales (or conversions).

I think guest post is the right strategy as guest posts get deep links. While links to homepage are great and help build domain authority deep links can really power your strategy to the next level and links back to your site from a relevant piece of content to a specific category or even product/service page means you promote the pages that convert. And that is worth much more to you.

I cannot thank guest posting enough…It has bought me an ever better income than I had before discovering it! I can get more money and good links if I guest post more. It is a simple equation.

The funny thing is that no real techniques have changed. It was always hard to get a good quality link that meant something. Easy links are too easy and hard links, you just have to work for.

Hi Mitz!
Love this topic! I get questions about link building all the time and I agree that one step people forget is testing! They what someone else to do all the work and tell them exactly how it’s done so they never have to lift a finger. But what works for one website might be different in another niche.
Thanks for the advice Mitz.
