How To Be Important on Twitter?

How To Be Important on Twitter?

by on May 7, 2010 · 62 comments

I was wondering when exactly the Topsy button go hot, and how a post ranked on the top 1k on Topsy.com after a particular person tweet or retweet it, of course it would be excited to reach the Top 100 on Topsy, so… I wanted to discover who is important on Twitter, and how to be important on Twitter, I want to have the power!

So, I went to our friend Google in a try to find something useful, and oh! By the way I love the new changes that Google made yesterday, I started to search about Twitter influence, the results came with a very nice site called Tweet Level , this site measure how important your Twitter account and tweets by comparing it to other tweeters, and also it provide some good influence tips, nice ha?!

Ok, let talk about the 4 factors of being a power Twitter user!

1- Influence score

To be a Twitter superstar, you need a decent number of followers who like what you tweet about, this is why they retweet it and click your links!

2- Popularity score

Popularity is not that hard thing to get, and it will have it step by step by following more people and give the best tweets you can, and use hashtags so people can find your tweet easily

3- Engagement score

I notice this is what most of us are missing, almost all famous Tweeters are missing the engagement. My first thought was they don’t engage because they are busy, but I think this is not the real truth, but if you have a huge number of follower you actually will face it, you will never be able to engage with a lot of people!

4- Trust score

You really need admirable trust score, it’s trust that makes people buy your products! And the trust on Twitter means how many people retweet what you are saying!

OK, that was a fast tips from what I found on Twitter Level site, go and check your importance on Twitter world! Don’t forget to recommend some of your followers, Follow Friday Helper makes it dead-easy to recommend tweeps!

#FollowFriday recommendation:

  • @agentdeepak : A blogger and a Student. he Provides Tips on Blogging, Marketing and Success. Give Design, SEO, Social Networking tips… etc.

And just in case you are wondering why I recommend following and engaging with those people above, it’s because they are so active on Twitter, and they engage with me lots! so… go a head follow them if you are not following them already, you don’t need to leave the page, try out the new @Anywhere feature that we have added to our blog!

Final Advice

Always remember… Power should be used for good!

I am pretty sure my Twitter score is bad. I ran it and here is what I found:

Influence 52.9
Popularity 52.9
Engagement 23.8
Trust 22.5

Obviously, I have a long way to go on the “trust” side of things.

Thanks for the cool share, Hesham.

I have never seen this site before.

twitter is great, we should take it as a network to meet people interested in our niche and don’t follow/unfollow everyone just to get followers.

I guess the two biggest factors is how much people are following you and how much tweets you are doing. And yes just like you said, depending on how much Twitter followers you have, the better the chances that they also retweet your tweets.

An interesting take on twitter influence Hesham.

I can relate to the engagement issue. When time is a factor it’s tough to chat as much as I’d like. I still make sure to RT and thank as many of my RT’ers as possible. Saying Thank You means a lot in the twitter world and helps to establish trust. If you’re not trusted you can’t expect to garner much interest on any social networking site.

Hi Hesham –

Thanks for the Tweet Level tip – first I have heard of it & it looks pretty cool.

Twitter is fun & is great for that minute or two you have between meetings or whatever. I tend to follow people when I am on the train going to work and when I just have to look away from what my coworkers are doing for a little while. Plus, there is so much good information out there.

Also, thank you so much for including me in your #FollowFriday recommendation! Anyone who is reading this who is not following Hesham – you should definately do that now!

Have a great day!

According to the Tweet Level, Trust is the most important thing, and Engagement is the hardest and this is why almost all Famous Tweeters are missing engagement!

Reply

John Paul from Make Money Every Day May 7, 2010 at 11:07 am

I disagree with that. To get the trust you first have to engage with people. So makes more sense that engage is most important then trust.

Engage first, trust comes right behind that.

Problem is engaging takes time and effort, you have to be on twitter longer then 5 min a day lol

Klout.com is another great tool to show how well your doing with your Twitter efforts.

5 what? man… I am spending hours on Twitter everyday, of course it’s not continues or then I will got crazy :) but I work a lot on my computer and I check Twitter every 30 minutes or one hour!

Your comment makes me think! Probably there is two two kind of people who use social media!

- The first kind is those who started their social media life by engaging a lot with others, they gain trust, then maybe they got more busy life latter, so they don’t have enough time today to engage more, but people are trusting them already from what they hear or see!

- The other kind of people: They are Famous people out of twitter (especially actors/singers) they can simply be so trusted after making a movie, even if they never ever engaged with people in the real life! and when they do commercials or say buy this (especially to women) then people will run to buy the product acting they really trust them even without thinking!

Are people getting crazy?! mmm… I know you are right about “Trust” John, but there is always something out of mind happening in the real world! I mean we all know @mashable and know Pete Cashmore the founder of Mashable.com and his work, and he is a very trusted person, but I never sow him engaging with anyone! probably because he is a busy guy running a big biz, but what the heck is @justinbieber ? what he did to the humanity to be #1 on Twitter?

You know what? I think we should sing, dance or something to engage more and get the trust! ;)
Thank you so much for telling us about klout.com, it great site, after all you are the expert John, I really trust you and I can not argue with you ;)

Reply

John Paul from Making Money May 8, 2010 at 7:21 am

Hesham…I’m no expert.. but I do know me and you and most bloggers as normal every day people will need to Engage FIRST to get that TRUST.

Now if you have a HUGE blog like Mashable, then you allready engaged and built that trust on your site, so it carries over to Twitter.

BUT if you come to twitter with no big following from you site, then ON TWITTER you need to Engage first, the Trust comes after that.

Now celebrities play with a whole different set of rules.. they get a free pass everywhere on Twitter too.

So I agree, we need to start a bloggers sing and dance group..lol throw it on Youtube become famous then we can play with celebrity status lol

Very interesting to see how they can measure your influence like this.

To me, the main thing I strive for is engagement. I’m not allured by thousands of followers because I’d rather have a couple of people actually talk and carry a conversation rather than tweet something and hear nothing back.

I love when someone brings up a great point or tweets something fantastic and share their own thought. It’s one thing to use Twitter as an alternative to RSS, the real benefit is sharing your side of the story.

If you tweet about a blog post, go ahead and tell people why you enjoyed it. Make a comment on the blog so when people do land on the page, they can see you’re engage and not just passing links.

I only wish I could use Twitter more during work. Although it makes me a little more unproductive, the ideas and conversations I have with people add a whole new level of engagement which, in turn, improves my work.

I like this kind of tools because there is no other way better than a site do the work for you, it’s so hard to calculate it by yourself!

And yeah… you are right, we should edit the tweets before retweet them, this is really good thing to do, but sometimes the fast life force you to hit the “retweet” button ;)

It’s good to know yourself, what you can do.. and the most important thing is knowing what you want to do!

Good luck buddy, and thanks for the awesome comments you put here on our blog ;)
