How Famous Bloggers use Comments for Content Creation

by on January 26, 2010 · 53 comments

At FamousBloggers we have a different way to think about comments and deal with them, we treat comments here as part of our post, don’t get me wrong, we will  NOT steal your comments or make money from your comments lol! We actually award our blog commenter by our own way! And probably you will earn money by commenting on our blog and join our conversations, after a few days we will pronounce the winner, and tell you who is the Famous commenter of January 2010.

How we build content at Famous Bloggers

FamousBloggers blog depends on your comments more than you think, and sometimes we build the post from the comments, some times we have a question for you and we actually don’t know the answer, and some other times we know the answer but we want to hear from a different mind to be sure of what we know! and this is the strategy we follow to keep this blog safe, helpful and informative for it’s community by the community, and there is a number of post here to approve it like this post by Mike of Craving Tech about  How Fast a New Post gets Indexed with Thesis Theme? … it’s an example of how we can build content using comments.

Before Commenting on Famous Bloggers

So, by adding your comment think always before you hit the submit button:

  • Is there an idea included on your comment?
  • Are you adding value to the post?
  • Is your comment and conversation related to the post topic?
  • Have you wrote your question in an understandable format?

We love also to have fun commenting, but not all the time ;)

After Commenting on Famous Bloggers

So, what is happening here when you add  a comment is that you participate on building FamousBloggers blog content, so it make sense that you should promote posts you comment on by sharing them on your social networks, I personally tweet 99% of posts I comment on and I only have two hands and one working laptop, so imagine if I have two laptops and a better bureau I will do my business better, well.. blog miracle could happen ;)

So.. let’s build a better blog and great content together! And don’t miss our monthly commenting contests!

I kinda learned this from experience and noticed someone was blogging based on my comments, but I didnt mind it much as he/she promotes my blog a few times when I have new posts, so its all good. Its a nice idea though and it could make a blogger’s life a little easier if you get a few ideas from commenters, as long as you give them credit for it.

Cindy, it’s really mazing to find a comment from you here on this post that I wrote 9 months ago! .. really! because I am working at the moment on a new related post, I explain on it how comment benefit for SEO, and I am giving good examples from Google search results!

I must come back after publishing it and add a link here! stay tuned.. it will be online in a few minutes from now!

Good idea to think about something like this, I’ve an article about this on my blog. Few of my article created base on my visitors comment, I just afraid that she/he claim that she’s/he’s idea, lol!
For a few people leaving a good quality comment is really hard bro. They just love to say thanks and then left their blog’s URL :D

Commenters are the driving force behind a blog. Our blogs would be nothing without an audience.

I enjoy commenting on blogs, but it does get frustrating when my comment is challenged.

I’m not sure if you understood what I meant. I wasn’t referring to that act of commenting itself, I meant using comments as content for future posts…as you were describing in the post. :)

Yeah! Suresh .. it need some creativity and you can apply this anywhere even on a new blog, I remember a friend of mine Brandon he say you don’t have to wait until people find your content, but you have to take your content to where people is ;)

Take your content to where people are, next time they will go where your content is!

Comments are a sign that a blog is high quality and well-trafficked (well..maybe not always high quality, but anyway…) You can often tell how much value a blog has by its number of comments and visitor interactions.
I’m hoping more and more people are finally getting that the “great post” comments are useless – in fact I treat these comments as spam – they get trapped in my filter and when I click their URL it often leads to me to some weird unrelated site. I don’t know if it was an actual person telling me they enjoyed my post or not – so you’re right that a comment should contribute something or it should at least contain elements that demonstrates that the person has at least read the entire post.

I used to call the “great post” comment as “Thank you” and Call me plz” comments ;) I some times do it also and thank someone but when they shock me with their posts you know! when there is no need to discuss anything in a blog post!

Hey Hesham,
Great Post. What’s the meaning of all this posts or blogs if there are no comments. Comments play an vital role, both for the Blogger as well as the reader. The Blogger gets to know the views, thoughts about the reader, and so does the reader. It’s a two way process. The more the better :)

I think we should always look to our blogs as a tool of conversation and try to build active community around it or else we will not have any value of blogging!

Thanks for your comment

Hesham,

That’s a unique idea and a great way to encourage people to comment.

How do you decide?

Perhaps you should put it to the public vote?

I have learned this from my past job as a Discussion Forum editor!

If you mean how I decide the winner of “Famous Commenter” contest, I go by giving points depending on the quality of the comment, and another point for activating the conversation on comments, for example if you as a question and I (or someone else) answered this question in the comments then you deserve a point!.. and so on!

Putting this for vote is a nice idea as well! maybe I can do this when I have doubt or there is 2 commentators got same amount of points! (Awesome idea.. now you got 2 points by only commenting once, you asked a question and provided the solution LOL!)

How do you deal with the admin overhead of doing such a thing?

I’d be interested.

Thanks.

It’s quite simple Andrew, I use a plugin to show me top commentators by any period of time and also all comments for a specific commenter, this where I pick the top 10 persons, and I use a paper and a pen to write down points by reading all their comments during the month of contest!

it toke me about 2 hours last month, I am not sure about this month because comments are getting much better which makes decision more harder.

I hope this answer your question and I am not mistaken!

I think that if you are serious about building a community around your blog, then you need to be interacting with your commenters. I try to personally reply to each comment – except for the ones that don’t need a reply, and I am starting to get new post ideas and great discussion happening in my comments.
