Great post, I am actually really looking forward to using the Google Analytics real time feature and some of the other goodies they just introduced. I think it is really important for bloggers to get more savvy about their traffic to enhance the experience both for them and their visitors

Andrew,

I have notices that Google Analytics is now showing what links people click on when they leave the page.

This is indeed a welcome addition.

You opinion of it???

Is there an alternative for those on wordpress.com blogs? I haven’t quite made the decision to jump to my own self-hosted wordpress.org blog (as I’m not sure if my current site is going to be restarted in 2011 or be a “failed” attempt #1)… but would love to use Google Anayltics to see what traffic I have (especially if I do pick up the writing regularly again).

In your video you show the use of plugins. To my understanding plugins are not available and cannot be used on wordpress.com blogs. And I don’t see a Google Analytics widget… where would you install an alternative to the plugin or insert the code?

Gil,

In the theme editior, you would add the GA code in the footer – normally called footer.php.

Add the GA code before

Great job Andrew..really impressive! Just some questions; I wonder if GA can track an individual user who visited the website and can GA also track what pages (within the website) the user went to next? Also does GA manage to track the time and date of the user came and left the website/pages? If no, then can you recommend any free software tool or even some reasonable pay software for these functions?

Cheers. Bee

Bee,

Only software I know that could do what you want (I think) is CrazyEgg.

Thanks so much for this. I have only just started using Google Analytics and to be honest I was a tad lost when it came to understanding 3 quarters of it lol

Nice work! I did a search for “google analytics video for blogging” and found this blog entry. Actually, I have the exact same plugin installed and was looking for a more advanced tutorial on analytics. Perhaps fodder for a sequel to this video, eh?

On an unrelated note, what software or tool are you using to create the video? We are real estate agents and we get questions often on how to do a particular property search. I think putting together a video would be great.

At the risk of getting a bunch of emails, I subscribe to this blog entry hoping for a reply. Thanks again for the video. Well done.

Joe,

I must have missed this comment – apologies.

I use Camtasia to create the videos. You can also try the free software CamStudio.

Being using GA for a long time now and really satisfied with the different reports about your site which you can get this free tool. However, I’m yet to know much about some of the stats. I look forward to some future posts that will talk about the different stats provided by GA!

Nice video Andrew. I have both Google Analytics and StatCounter codes in my footer and I find myself ignoring the Google Analytics and checking only the StatCounter. Both give more information than I know what to do with and StatCounter just seems easier to me. I always figured I would eventually ‘graduate’ to Google Analytics, that’s why I installed the code, but never really used it. Perhaps a nice future post would be to show use how to use all that statistical information.

This is exactly what I am doing. I also prefer more statcounter. Statcounter show instant traffic results, which I think google analytics does not show. Statcounter is going more handy for me as I am using it since a long time.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the video. I’ve used GA for awhile now and I’m glad you showed the plugin. Can you tell me what is the real advantage of using the plugin instead of just installing the code? Thanks.

Ileane

No real benefit of using the plugin. Just some people don’t want to change the theme code to installed the GA code.
