Discussion forums

People are starting to ask if forum posting is effective for link development. Today you will find out if forum posting is useful for backlinks, direct traffic, or both.

What Is Forum Posting?

Forum posting is the process of commenting on or creating new discussions (threads) on forums to get backlinks. That is what it originally was used for, anyway. You get backlinks from the links at the end of your posts called signature links. Forum posting is very easy.

Does Forum Posting Bring Direct Traffic?

Yes, it does. But only if you are posting on a popular forum that is relevant to your website. Your signature links will only be attractive to users if they are interested – They will only be interested if your signature  if the topic is relevant to the topic of the forum. This means if you want to get results with forum posting, you shouldn’t put a furniture link on a webmaster forum. Although some people using the forum might be interested, most of them won’t even see your link.

Does Forum Posting Bring Backlinks?

Yes it does. Obviously, you will get links from forum posting. How effective these links are is a completely different question. Links from forum posting are virtually worthless. Google knows how easy posting on forums is and that they are not links that the owner of the forum puts because he/she likes your site. In addition, forums are seriously SEO handicapped – Dirty URLs, duplicate content, 50 outgoing links per page, etc.

And…?

Forum posting doesn’t help you bring search engine traffic. Meaning that the backlinks you get really don’t matter. However, you do get traffic from forum posting, and this is important to note. To succeed in getting traffic from forum posting, you should be an active member on a popular forum that is related to your website. Hello Karan,

Forum posting not just use to get back-links. You are saying these all thing in term of SEO. Forums are not made for SEO work. These are used for discussion, to find best solution of any problem, to know views of peoples on a topic and more. We give links in signature to get right solution of discussion that happen in forum site.

SEO guys use forum to get backlinks and write most of time spam content. I hope you will agree with me.
Best of Luck

I don’t post on forums very often just occasionally to get something jumpstarted. I’ll hit up one of the more popular forums and make a post or 2 and call it a night.

Find an active forum related to your niche, know what you’re talking about and become a regular…you will see amazing incoming traffic.

And search engines do index forum threads…

Agree with you bro. Forum is a great place to get backlinks, and get your authority if you can help or answering people questions. That will help you to get more exposure and visibility, more if you run a business and get more client, definitely you must be an active member and help others :) That will be a nice promotion for your business.
Thanks

Gabrielle – Thank you for your comment. I agree that you should try to post on forums as relevant as possible, but it can be hard. If a site blocks you because you are a competitor, they probably aren’t even worth it. :D

I must agree with Ching Ya and in most respects with the author of this blog.
Posting often in a related forum helps a lot. Leaving the right teaser to a topic of your web or blog which makes people curious is the answer to forum traffic

It has happened to me that my comments were not welcome in forums which were in direct competition. One was a forum on Tenerife which had a monetizing web as well.
I wouldn’t be a 100% sure how Google values our backlink in forum comments.
The link statistic tool of my web host only tells me if a link is gone, no good or orphan. Most forum entries are seen as good links. Then the statistical link popularity by points seems to somehow match Google PR. Sooner or later at least.

I just wish to add that, apart from related topic your signature will only be noticed by other members if you’re a frequent poster or somebody who’s willing to build relationship with them in and outside the forum. :) Unless one is looking for fast traffic otherwise I do believe this can also be an important factor.

Be sure to read the TOS of every forum you join, some do not allow this.

I see the same thing. I am not interested in those type of offers… Why do they come up? Even if people think they will get backlinks with forum posting, they aren’t even related sometimes.
