Having a user friendly blog is the key to the success of many bloggers. If you please your readers then you are already marketing yourself because they will definitely tell other people about you.

Holly – you should be able to easily customize all your post meta descriptions just by installing the all-in-one seo plug-in. That way you can write your meta description at the same time as you write your post

Thanks for the 13 tips! I especially liked number 6-Manually Add Informative Description to the Meta Tag Description. I had no idea! It took awhile to figure out, but there does seem to be a way to do it with Blogger.

First go to Dashboard > Design > Edit HTML and find this line in your blog template HTML codes:

Then put the meta tags code immediately below that line. The final result should be as shown below.

What this code does is apply the keyword meta tag to all pages and limit description meta tag to only your homepage.
Save the template.

Checking the meta tags

Confirm whether you’ve entered the meta tags correctly, using an online meta tag checker.

Make sure you check at least two pages -home page and one of the post pages.
Compare the extracted meta information, notice the difference.

…for some reason I missed notification mail for your comment, so this reply comes delayed Anyway – thanks for the insights. From what I’ve followed you and your company, you know your stuff, so I’m very happy that you think my checklist is sound…

I personally don’t worry too much about keywords in the meta description, but I do put them there is if fits naturally, and the description keeps its “click me” vibe. And the same with bolding/italics, I don’t stress about it, but highlighting key concepts of the post is important (for scannability/readability), and often the key concept is the keywords

Hi Antti,

You have outlined indeed the essentials to make some adjustments in terms of On-page SEO for blogs. This can also work as an on-page checklist that everyone can easily follow. Can I also add some more ideas on some things you have mentioned here?

In our case, when we are doing on page optimization, in order of priority, having the keyword in the title is the most important thing. Then have that keyword in the meta description as well as in the H1 tag. Then, below this is having that keyword on the page in the content, where it can be bolded or italicized. So, as you can see it’s really not “that important”… especially when you consider on page optimization makes up only 20% of the whole SEO equation.

After doing this, along with other tips that you mentioned here, it is also essential to build quality backlinks to your site’s pages. That way, as your fresh posts will be paired with quality backlinks, then the more likely it is for your sites to be pushed on the top spot for the keywords that you’re optimizing.

Though I think many of us do everything we can for SEO, but we tend to have some short coming when it comes to the content, the real reason why people would keep coming back to your blog.
