How did you start?

Sure you started with programming using one or more  scripting languages. The most common is HTML which is the base for PHP and ASP.  After everything is created, your next step is finding a web host. Web hosting plays a crucial role in site building. A good web hosting company offers quality, security, privacy, and right bandwith to store your files. It also offers software and services to give you complete control of your site including revenue. It may be costly to have a self-hosted site but it pays off in the end.

Are clicks all that matter?

Click is not all that matters. You’ll also need viewership and repeat viewers. You definitely want a solid group of regular viewers, they are the backbone of the value of the site. You also want new viewers just as much though. New viewers mean the site is growing and people want to buy sites that are on the rise. They want to know that there is definitely a future interest in your site. You will want to show that it is rock solid with a great outlook. It’s good to try and get people to sign up so you can show an existing base. If you also have something that is one of a kind or utilizes a great new technology that will have a major affect on the value of your site. New technology pays and it pays well especially if it proves to be successful.

How much money does it bring in?

Does your site make money? Big question. If it brings in a good amount of income every month then that obviously increases the value. It really depends on what your site is intended to do. There are a number of sites that sell nothing and rely solely on viewership, there are other sites that are simply dedicated to selling products. If you sell a product or service you will want to show how well it does financially and make sure that factors into the sale price. Another thing is your investment. If your site sells stock photos for example and you had to buy those photos then there is a cost to build the site and that should be factored into a sale price. It depends on what people are looking to buy but certainly content is very valuable these days. Look at all that your site has to offer and what that may be worth. You may also want to get an appraisal by a third party company.

How do unique visitors and memberships factor into the value?

It’s best to start with the more obvious indicators of value. Unique visitors and returning users are the biggest factors that go into evaluating any site. Investors want to know exactly how many people are visiting the site and how many are repeat users. Membership is also a factor as it reflects customer base. The more members, the better. The other value to membership is that you have a developed demographic who you could market to. With your members you can also determine an average monthly income from this and then use that number as a way to come up with a value of your site. Having a lot of both is great but the customer base helps put a good financial number to the value of the site. Unique visitors are nice but if they don’t sign up then it could be assumed that the site wasn’t interesting enough for them. Unique visitors are good if you are selling ad spots on your site. Being able to drive traffic to advertisers via banners on your sites is of great value.

What about all the services I offer and the actual profit?

Offering many services is great but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you own an expensive site. If you have a lot of overhead and not a lot of profit then that will be viewed as a negative. Ideally your site should simply have a large membership, high net profit and very low overhead. Keep it lean. In the end though the most important fact to take into consideration when you put a value on your site is how much money does the site really make. After all the costs are deducted from your gross income, what are you left with and how long do you think the profit can be sustained or even grown. This is the single most important factor when coming up with a price.

What is symbolic link?

In computing, a symbolic link (also symlink or soft link) is a special type of file that contains a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that affects pathname resolution.

Of course if you talk or chat with them they will tell you that they had to edit these files on all their costumers websites and you will got no meaningful answer like what happened with most of the people on discussion forums talking about this matter. I am just imagining the reaction of people who are not so much involved with coding and hosting problems, they just want to run their online business without problems, but there is no scape and sometimes there is no return!

Images on my Drupal website is missed up

Maybe you don’t know this, but our MMO Social Network is using Drupal platform, which considered the number one content managements system in the world, and the most high efficient platform for creating websites.

I notice image display problem yesterday on the website, I was about to pronounce the winners of our Making Money Contest and this problem put me down, I spend more than 4 hours trying to find why this happened, starting from checking the website settings, hosting settings, recent files modified and I found that my .htaccess has been changed!

I was having a backup of the website (thanks God), so I compared the new .htaccess with the old one using some online text comparing tool and found the differences between the two files, it was on the Symlinks link code, then I searched Google using the “Symlinks” keywords trying to find a fast solution and I found it on the Drupal discussion forum, it was an issue for all Drupal website, and everybody still talking about it and trying to discover and solve this problem.

How to fix Drupal .htaccess file and Symlinks problem?

To get your images to display again you need to edit /sites/default/files/.htaccess.
Change the line that says:
Options +FollowSymLinks
to be:
Options SymLinksIfOwnerMatch

What should business owners do to end hosting nightmares?

So now I can say, BlueHost is like GoDaddy and Hostmonster are like any other whatever hosting company when it’s about shared hosting service, they will give the right for themselves to change and edit your files without further notice or even any notification if they find something harmful specially host security, and this is what I don’t like because I earn from my websites and blogs, and I will not happy to wake up one morning and find everything missed up.

So I recommend moving to a dedicated server at the first chance if you run an online business and don’t want to run through this kind of problems.

Now! We know we can make money from ComLuv, but what we don’t know is CommentLuv making or welling to make money from CommentLuv enabled blogs?!

I found a blog post in a non-English language talking about some CommentLuv server errors happen when commenting on CommentLuv enabled blog, I have translated the post to read it, and I discovered interesting thing happened with the guy who wrote it, he was telling that CommentLuv server sometimes return a wrong link, and this made the owner of that blog think of these two possibilities:

1. CommentLuv is taking advantage of his blog and displaying ad links instead of his blog links!
2. CommentLuv sever is being exploited to change the link

And the interesting thing was not in the post it self, it was in the comments on that post, it was the only place on the internet to find an answer of Latief’s question about the error he keep getting when he comment on CommentLuv enabled blogs which is “bad juju just happened”, and I found an expected answer as this maybe a server error reflect this message to the user. This is why I always talk about paying attention to blog comments, it is the meat of the bone, and has the real butter of the post sometimes!

So.. anyways,we are now talking about the bad behavior and strange links in CommentLuv that could happen while commenting (This never happen with me personally before) and what if CommentLuv is making money from showing different links instead of the original feed links that it has to show (and I don’t think this something Andy would do)!

And because I can not and I don’t have an answer to this question, I thought to ask Andy to give us a short statement about CommentLuv and ComLuv and make things clear to all bloggers. So I had three question to ask him and he was kind enough to answer them. So let’s see what Andy have told to us!

Hey Andy, I have sent you the link of the post on the non-English (Vietnamese) blog that tells about the CommentLuv server issue and the errors that happen, there no better way but to ask the person who is in charge and behind CommentLuv, so what you can tell us about it?

First things first, the Vietnamese site post. I translated it with Google and I can see exactly what went on.

This was happening around the time the server was having real trouble with the amount of requests it was receiving. Every time a blog with CommentLuv on it gets spammed, it means my server has to try and find the feed at every site submitted on the spam comments and nearly all of them didn’t have feeds which triples the work the server tries to do.

When there’s a thousand comments a minute coming in, well, the server decided to give up and sulk in the corner. It did this 3 times before I managed to put some caching in the API so it sends back the last result if a new request is made within the cache time. problem solved! ….. not quite. It was working really well but only for registered members.

The way the API did it was see the URL being requested and on what page. I get the member number from the URL and search the db for that member and send back their cached result. Thing is, I forgot about non members! so it was searching for a non member id of -1 and sending back the result from whichever non member commented last when a new comment from a non member gets made.

Luckily, because I’m a twitter freak with it open on every device I use, I was notified very early that it was happening and was able to fix it pretty quickly..

It’s all working now and I am happy to say that my changes means the ComLuv server has stayed up for the whole week and has around 2/3 less cpu usage. Commentluv for all! (except for a few who were commenting during the change)

Well, spammers are everywhere and it’s hard sometimes to deal with their attacks, I hope you are ready always for them. One more important question Andy, is CommentLuv taking advantage of our blogs?

It’s not in my mission statement. That’s more like ‘write code write code WRITE CODE!’

Sometimes the code I write has unexpected results which were never intended but experiencing that and fixing them is how software gets improved and updated. (especially mine! lol, I’m a self taught coder so my mistakes sometimes teach me more than if everything goes right first time)

Is CommentLuv Making any Money from your blog? or selling premium features and other options that you provide to make money from?

Nope. not yet.

Every month the server, management fees, premium features and Amazon S3 bandwidth cost me money.

I see! it’s a project with high expenses, Is CommentLuv selling ad links for advertisers to show instead of the original links in the comments?

I have no monetization plans for peoples links. The whole point of the plugin is to provide links to the comment authors site so everyone else can see what they write about. If the link wasn’t theirs, it’d be just another kontera type link which would need a squillion clicks before it made any money and no one would click anyone’s links if they thought they might be ads.

Hope this clears things up, the screen shots of the links on the Viet site show dates and times similar to the tweets notifying me about it so I think it’s safe to say that they were both talking about the same thing.

One more thing, the cache. It saves your last post for 24 hours if you’re a non member so if people aren’t seeing their very latest post they need to check the pull down box to see when CommentLuv api renews it.

As a registered member, your cache reduces to 1 hour and you get 10 posts from your site to choose from. Plus, you get to buy additional urls and default links if you’re a registered member.

I understand now it depends on the system cash and time the feed takes to be updated, now I see another importance for registering our blogs to ComentLuv,  this makes a lot of sense. Another important question, can someone exploited CommentLuv server and override the links?

Only javascript stored on the same server as the blog would have any potential to hijack the links and that would have to be installed by the blog owner and have to be written specifically to modify the CommentLuv script. I wont give details of course

LOL! of course! OK, here is my last question Andy, what is the meaning of “bad juju just happened” message? it happen sometimes while someone trying to add a comment to a CommenLuv enabled blog!

Bad juju happens when the URL being requested results in a feed error 3 times. The server was dealing with nearly half a million error or non existent feeds a week and I had to put in the bad juju bit to keep the server alive. It’s very simple to fix, just visit Comluv unpan URL page and enter your site URL to clear the juju.

If you’re a registered member, you can specify your exact feed url so it will help to prevent this from happening.

My Blogs are eating my time and eating me before my time

This is the main problem of any blogger, planning posts, finding ideas, writing them down, publish posts, reply to comments, commenting on other blogs, and socialize with bloggers friends on different social networks and so on!

Lots of work to do here and there and the revenue is not enough to pay our bills sometimes, and this keeps you for longer time on your laptop working and trying and … ufff!

I was imagining how a single blogger feel and trying to compare this feelings with a married blogger feeling, specially when he don’t have his own office or he has to blog from a home office, so let’s see how both of them could look like, I am going to start with the married blogger:

Married Blogger

• He don’t have too much freedom at home (unless he have a supportive wife like I do)
• He usually carry his laptop allover the house trying to find a quite area
• Sometimes look like stupid when family visit because he is blogging and can not stay with them!
• He have to answer the same question thousands of times (What you are doing?!)
• He have also to say these words more than once when it’s food time “OK! I am coming love”
• He run to his wife to surprise her when he earn $10 from his blog! (and the amazing thing is she got excited and forgot he spend 100s of dollars LOL!)
• Social Networking is his “Nightmare” as a door for jealousy
• Well.. He have to hear some s**t from time to time!
• Sometimes he lie about his blog traffic naah Just kidding!

Single Blogger

Oh yeah! This is the lucky guys, yes we find someone who cares and make coffee for us, but some times we have to do it by our selves, but you have all the time to do what you want in this life and at least no body ask a singles blogger “how much you have earned today”!

I didn’t mention kids because I don’t have any yet! But it’s going to be more fun if I have LOL!

Maybe this comparing post is taking us to some red areas that we shouldn’t talk about or discuss, so I give you all the excuses if you don’t comment here, but I would love to hear some real stories from some brave married men, I am sure that you have some exiting ones so I want to know what’s happening with you guys!

Who do you expect to believe you?

I was thinking why someone start a new blog and write a high quality professional blog posts with tones of valuable information describing how he is getting 1000 unique visitors per day and making $100 daily and oh! Yeah they story of how he worked out to get his blog ranked high on search engines and how fast Google cashes his blog posts. You know what was the deal? Absolutely fake posts and fake blog, all what it has a 20 posts of crap and a blog worth nothing!

Oh boy!

I was shocked today while taking a tour on the internet checking some main webmasters discussion forums and what people (bloggers) say and discuss about. It’s funny and sad at the same time, I will not mention the forum or the bloggers just because it will not make a big difference for you, the thing is what we can learn from that lesson!

Write the truth and only the truth

I got it now! Those bloggers are creating a perfect blog, a prefect blog that doesn’t exits in our blogosphere, but they are making it some how, they are building a blog, a perfect blog that start makes money from the day zero of blogging, they claim to make money from the first day and end with making more money everyday. They are giving the best tips from their own (fake) experiences.

They are hiding something, yes.. they want to make money from the internet like others but they just look so perfect that you will fall in love with their blogs from the first look! Their blogs looks so perfect that it’s weird and makes me suspect what I read. The bad thing is they are cheating their readers in case they have any!

The real life of a newbie blogger

Yes I can go back on time and edit my old posts and add value to them and make them look more perfect, but I will never be able to learn this tip at the first a few month of blogging, because simple I will be busy trying to get ideas to write about, I will be busy writing new posts because I need to have content for my blog or socializing by commenting on other blogs,  I will be posting a guest post to boost my blog success, I will be testing and setting up new plugins and got my blog crashed because of that, and I am going to manage this and get some help from expert bloggers or other bloggers who started maybe one year before I did! Yes!.. This is the real life of bloggers when they first start a blog! We will be spending money not earning any money at least for a few months!

So PLZ don’t tell me lies! Just stop it!

2- Publish your Poems to your blog

In this step I assume you have wrote some great poems of your own, get them up to the blog, make sure they are not published elsewhere, I recommend you publish at least 10 unique posts.

Just do it and don’t wait for anyone to visit you back, I am sure they will do with out you have to ask, the secret is “be nice to people”!

From my personal experience with blog contests, I recommend it for you specially if you just started your blog and you want to get the word out and tell people that your blog exists, plan it well and have good prizes to get the attention, and start to promote your blog through it. Let’s say that you will search Google trying to find what you want, by logic you will use keywords like “DoFollow blogs” or “U comment I Follow” or whatever will came into your mind to find these blogs, and also you will try to add keywords related to your niche as well, but when I tried this I couldn’t actually find any good results, and what I mean hear by good results is niche related results, of course you will find tones of DoFollow blogs, but is it’s not on the niche you are looking for! And also maybe they changed their strategy and Google still cashing them as DoFollow, but in fact they are not anymore! So.. forget about DoFollow blog lists now!

The traditional way.. is it working?

The most known way to find DoFollow blogs is to search by images, and try to find the DoFollow image that should lead to a DoFollow blog, but also this will not work the way you want, and will not bring results related to a particular niche search! And you will find yourself ending where you have started!

Brilliant idea!

Now! We are about the exciting part or our post, so.. be ready! while I was searching I found a really brilliant idea, why it’s brilliant? Because it’s a way to earn money online that I want to share with you! it’s a kind of DoFollow blog directory, but it seem to not a directory as we used to see, but anyways it has a search form that help you to search between 904 blogs, and it’s all DoFollow blogs in a specific niche of your choice, and it works some how!

After submitting my blog, I got a message says that operation successful! And my blog is waiting approval queue, and there also a number of the request, and at the bottom there is a button that say “Understood” and it seem that I have to confirm by clicking it.

Wait a minute!

The search box on that website is actually a Google Custom search box, which means the process of submitting blogs is made manually, mmm OK.. now I got it!

They use the submit form to let you add your DoFollow blogs, this form probably is not attached to any database, but it’s a kind of sending email form, that will send the blog info to the webmaster’s email, then simply the webmaster will add your blog to his Google custom search list, to tell Google to search only on these domain names, I got this exclusion because when you search for a blog or a niche the search return a few URLs from the same domain name!

So, basically it’s a way of making money, of course for the owner of the website, and it’s also not bad for you to add your DoFollow blog to the list!

Anyways, I have some doubts about this website, and I didn’t want to link to it, but I will do to let you know about it, maybe you would like to use it or maybe you will ate the idea, and this is why I explained how it works for those who don’t want to try it!
