How to Move from Bloggers Blog to Wordpress Self Hosted Blog in less than 3 Minutes?

I just got this question yesterday on my post about upgrading Wordpress on My Life Thinking blog “I wish I could upgrade but I am still on blogger. I wish someone would write a post about exactly what the complexities of switching from Blogger to WP. I have nightmares (not really) about losing all of my data and PR“, so I thought to answer it here as Getting the answer to a question on comments is one of the things I am going to do on Famous Bloggers blog. On this post you will learn how to move your blog from blogger to WordPress without losing your Google PageRank and RSS subscribers.

The answer: First of all you have to get your Domain name and find a good hosting service before you start with this process; choose a good domain that reflects your niche blogging. Following this steps will help you to move from Blogger to Wordpress without losing any of your data, readers, blog feed subscribers or search engine rankingsGoogle PageRank.

Here is a very simple way to move from Bloggers blog to Wordpress self hosted blog, Wordpress has a Blogger Importer plug-in that can be accessed from your Wordpress dashboard (Tools -> Import -> Blogger), the importer application allows you to import posts and comments from your Blogger account into your Wordpress blog (note that it’s not going to move your photos or any videos you have uploaded, you should do that manually after moving to your new blog!), follow the instruction by telling Blogger to let Wordpress access your account by clicking on the author button then Grant access button, it will return you to Wordpress page again and you will see a list of your blogs on Blogger, choose the blog you want to move to Wordpress. And you are done!

blogger-wordpressI have searched the internet to find some video tutorials to take you through steps and help you with this issue, video tutorials are great help because it simple show us that things are really working, so plz watch it more than one time before starting moving your blog, it’s less than 3 minutes video tutorial by labnol.

When I used the import feature I had to edit every post that had images, because my images were still linked to Blogger.

This import feature will not move your images! you have to do it manually! this is could be the hard part, the import feature will import your database records only, no files will be imported.

Good tutorial but it doesn’t really explain how you don’t lose your pagerank. I assume that there most be some way that you can do a 301 redirect of all the pages on the old blogger blog to the new wordpress blog, also I think that the URL structures would have to be the same so the all links would go to the new site.

Thank you for this post. I also consult about it on digital point forum. My blog is on blogspot, but if I change my blog to wordpress, then it is more chance that I will loss my PR and all rank on my blog. So I am not interested to change my domain.

Please be careful using the import feature, although I never had to myself, I have heard some real bad tales of it just not working properly. If I may offer an alternative…

Copy/paste each and every post over by hand, while leaving a snippet on the blogger blog. That snippet along with a line reading, “for the full article please visit…..”and leave the link to your new blog.

Depending 0n the amount of posts, this could take a while, but you can see the benefits; just another thought. :)

Trying this way is not going to cost you anything, as you original blog may still exists so you will not lose your data! believe me, no one want to do this by copy/past way, imagine a blog with 1000 post?!

Actually many people do it that way. If the blogger blog has excellent search engine traffic, you don’t lose those visitors.

However we’re not talking about 1000 posts. ;)

Hi Hesham, very good tutorial and very simple indeed. Just a reminder though that if you do this, you will have to change or alter the permalink structure to ensure that you do not have broken links. WP and Bloggers permalink structure are not the same and the tip you have provided does the job at only 99%, lol.

This is great advice if your blog name while in blogger did not have the .blogspot in it url address. I wish I had done that when I started. But if I change my blog now, my name and url would automatically have to change since I won’t have .blogspot anymore. Therefore I would lose my links and page rank.

Anyone starting a blog on blogspot, I highly recommend that you buy your own domain name.
