tips for better blog

Lots of people have their own blogs these days. And many of these bloggers want to make money. Others don’t necessarily want to earn an income through their blog.

No matter if you want to make money or not, the ultimate goal of every blogger is to create a better blog. In this article I am going to present you some ideas that will help you to improve your blog.

So let’s get started.

Create a Resource Page

Whatever topic you cover, resource pages are invaluable. If you cover everything related to Wordpress on your blog than a resource page with a list of lots of useful plugins might be valuable to your readers. You could also list Wordpress themes and differentiate between paid and free Wordpress themes.

It’s all about being creative. Simply think about what would be useful to your audience and create a resource page about it.

Become Active in a Forum

A forum is a great way to show off your expertise. If you want to become active on a forum then pick a forum that’s related to your niche.

Forums are all about helping others. Simply help other people.

By helping others and giving advice you establish yourself as an expert. That’s what forums are all about.

But by becoming active in a forum you will gain another advantage. And one of the most overlooked uses of forums is that you can use them as a basis for your own articles. For example create a polls for your articles. A forum has probably an even bigger audience so why not create a poll in a forum that you could use in one of your articles?

Build an Email List

Email is a great way to keep up with your readers. It has become more popular these days but people still use it the wrong way. They use it to promote affiliate products but that’s not the way to go.

Use your list to directly talk to your readers. Engage them. And further make them feel special because your subscribers are your most loyal readers after all. Send them something that your normal readers don’t get to know about.

Host a Contest

There aren’t too many blogs that create a contest but it’s a great way to engage your readers. It also gives your blog some additional exposure. And you don’t really need a well-known blog to attract sponsors.

Helmi from Huzzer Magazine got $3500 worth of products for his contest even though he has only 30 subscribers for his blog. Everything is possible. At least try!

Create an Elevator Pitch

This is also one of the things Darren Rowse covered in his ebook 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. An elevator pitch basically gives you an overview of what your blog is about. It’s is only one or two sentences long.

For example for my blog my elevator pitch is Helping You Become the Blogger You Want to Be, because that’s what I believe my blog is about.

Think about what you want to achieve with your blog? Do you want to make money? Do you want to help others?

Answering these questions might give you a good idea of what your elevator pitch should be like. Here is also an advanced article on creating an elevator pitch.

Comment on Other Blogs

Commenting is one of the most underrated strategy of getting traffic to your blog. I have doubled my traffic through commenting on other blogs and so can you.

Be honest when you comment on another blog, you don’t have to agree with what the author said. Actually the best comments are those that criticize the author. It is all about adding value to the conversation and that’s what you are ultimately doing by critically examining the article.

I am sure you have been said this before, but damn you own a very nice blog! I am jealous and hope I can create something as good as you. I am sure you have been told that earlier, but seriously lol. Good job and I will surely be back again. I’m sure you would like some more traffic to your web site because everyone does.

Such an informal thoughtful post. I enjoyed reading it. You talk sense! Email lists are very important. They are the key to making money out of your loyal followers. I agree in giving them something for free. Give them more value than your normal blog readers so they feel special.

Also I love prefer blog commenting over forums. With blog commenting you can demonstrate your knowledge more and get very very targeted traffic!

You have to make your subscribers feel special after all they are, aren’t they? I think that’s one of the points most people don’t take into account. They simply send they subscribers the most recent blog post with a link back to their web site. I mean these are your most loyal followers why would you send them a link to something they have probably already read. Thanks for the comment btw. you have a niche web site ;)

Great post. it is really sad to see so many people not utilizing all the avenues that we have to promote their sites. Blog commenting and forum postings are both awesome, if you use them right.

The problem is most people FAIL big time, and they wind up doing more to DESTROY their reputation than build it. Some people need to learn what valuable content really is. After all, giving away a free ebook that is nothing but an infomercial for your paid product is not valuable.

If you are going to post in forums asking how to get 100 visitors to your site, dont have a link in your sig file saying you can teach me how to get 1000…
You know the ones I am talking about. You see it every day. I have sites in many niches, and I see it the most in marketing forums and blogs, but I see it on other sites as well…
still, blog commenting and forum posting are my 2 biggest sources of traffic. even better than seo in my opinion.

I have to agree James. Blog commenting drives way more traffic to my web site than SEO. And the great thing about it is that people will come back if you have written an interesting post on your web site.
And yes there are too many people telling you how you can get 1000 of visitors to their web site even though they have only 10. I used to be like that talking about ways to make money online even though I haven’t made any money myself. Thanks for the comment

For the last tip, another bonus is if CommentLuv is enabled…such as here, of course! Having a great design helps too–if a blog’s too hard to navigate, I’m probably not going to visit it again. And that will definitely have an impact on your traffic.

You are right. A good design is essential for creating a better blog. I also think that the design must be unique in order to avoid to look too generic. Hope to see you again around here (solely because of the fantastic design :P )

Regarding the blog commenting.

Commenting is an excellent way for any new blog to get some attention, subscribers, commentators etc. When I first started getting active in the blogosphere I went totally nuts on the blog commenting and I was really amazed at how effective it was.

I only realized that recently. I have nearly doubled my traffic through simple blog commenting.
It can be really effective if you leave interesting comments otherwise it’s not worth it. I think that’s where people go wrong. They simply comment for the sake of commenting and realize that it’s not such an effective method after all.

I hope you do. But again I think the thing that applies to effective commenting also applies to using a forum. Don’t really promote your blog.
Rather help out people, answer their questions or help them solve a problem. After doing this for a while you will be definitely seen as an expert.
